Well according to Lakewooder, thats not true, neither of you would get help . And i believe you are correct that on average, a white driver would get assistance more often. I would also suspect that to be true in Plano, Lakewood, Frisco, etc. I have no idea how much longer it would take but I have no doubt there would be a difference on average.

Well, Princeton . . .
Looks like the Northside white folks have wandered off into their who-dislikes-them-colored-folks-least-athon on your thread, here.
So your thread is probably provided about all the good info it can for you, and from the looks it is on path to brain-dead.
Here is what I would do, were I in your situation -- Probably your best path is to do a walk-around or bike-around of the areas you are thinking. Just smile and wave and be chatty with the folks you meet along the way and see what you think. Stop in the Highland Park shopping center. There is a fairly good Mexican place there -- Mi Cocina. And a couple of little burger-type places, too. Wander through some of the stores. Maybe Simon-Davids, too (local grocery store). See how folks treat you and if you like it and can live with it.
You might consider renting in the area until you see if it is what you really like. Best to you and welcome home.

I would be curious to hear about his bike riding experience in HP. I am sure he will have a great story to tell.

>>For the first time in history, Highland Park, Texas, a town of about 9000, surrounded by Dallas on three sides, and by University Park on the other, has a Black homeowner:
Burnt Orange Report's Journal - June 9th 2003<<
Karen Watson still lives in HP ... she's runs a very successful mortgage business near Preston Center. Perhaps the OP can easily find her business number on the internet and talk with her about her first hand experiences living in HP. In fact, she just might want to know she is being set as an example on this board.

I think contacting Mrs. Watson would be a great idea. What better way to know the truth than to ask someone who has went thru it. Thats a great suggestion Spree.

Well, the truth be told, we have some "interesting" stories to tell from riding bikes in the South side of Dallas.
But the thing with the bike -- as opposed to a car -- is that it gets you outside the steel-and-glass cocoon of a car. Let's you hear and smell and "feel" an area.
Do you suppose you can get pulled over for a DWB in Highland Park while on a bike?

Stay away from there
I'm a journalist who has covered Dallas for more than 10 years.
Highland Park, University Park and Preston Hollow are not diverse at all. And it's obvious the people who courted you to come here--didn't bother to tell you. Why? Cause that's where they live, they hang out.
To be blunt, it doesn't matter if you graduated from an Ivy League School or the local community college. If you're a person of color you will always be a second class citizen in those communities. They are white, white, white. Some people are snobs, and others are not, but they have an air about them that says "I'm better than you". The schools and the police forces in UP and HP are not diverse.
You have to figure out what are your priorities. Do you have to live in an affluent community? Do you have to live among the Ivy leaguers? Many of the rich African American's live in the suburbs and they huge houses. Some live in Preston Hollow, but very few.
You asked about racism. Here's a story. Last year a principal at Preston Hollow Elementary school was busted after she was accused of segregating the children. Google Dallas Morning News and Preston Hollow School. According to published reports, the principal had segregated the students for years. She had been putting the black and Latino kids down one hallway and white kids down the other. This way if any rich white families visited they wouldn't see any kids of color. It was the brainchild of the white PTA. Racism? oh yes.
Look for a home in Lake Highlands. You have the rich and not so rich there. It's very diverse and in Dallas. It's only a hop and a skip from UP and HP.
