Once in a while you'd see a story where someone dies of heat stroke, or a giant ball of hail killing someone or rendering them unconscience, or maybe a tornado story....but nothing that ever made me think of wanting to visit here.

Sockets...this one made me laugh out loud!! The giant ball of hail.......lol
Your right ..I never heard so much about Texas until I moved here. It's funny. It's always "Texan this" or "Texas that" . Even the car commercials have to mention TEXAS!! I never noticed that in Cali. You know like "Ford is the best in Texas" or "Chevy's driving Texas" etc.

I would imagine the only people who would be out during this kind of weather is storm chasers. They usually go out in groups during severe weather season and chase potential tornadic storms. Imagine that....people actually trying to find tornadoes while most people hope to avoid them.

Glad you enjoyed the list of DFW museums, Guerilla. I made a point to list all I could find, whether important or not, serious or trivial, in order to convince you that Houston could not top Dallas. Houston's set of museums, important or trivial, is maybe half of Dallas' list.
Yeah, I thought the Cockroach museum would get a laugh. Dallas is a more interesting city than Houston because it contains more out-of-the-ordinary things, as well as more of the conventional.
BTW, DFW has SEVERAL museum districts, not just one, like Houston.
No, Shannon, Dallas does not advertise in Cali or anywhere else.
Another bit of difference btwn DFW and HOU is Dallas' superiority in terms of art, foreign, specialty and indie films on exhibition.
Houston has 3 real art houses, with a total of 14 screens... 2 smaller, older Landmarks with 3 screens each, and the Angelika, 8 screens, 4 of which are used for art films. Dallas has 4 art film houses, Magnolia, Inwood, Angelika Dallas, Angelika Plano, with a total of 21 screens. In Houston, the 2 landmarks are old and ratty, and the Angelika is new. In Dallas, the Inwood is old, and the Magnolia and both Angelikas are new, state of the art.
Houston has 12 art films playing on Sat, May 26. Dallas has 17 art films playing, many of them booked into more than one art house. Dallas' advantage is way out of proportion to its slightly larger population, because there is more interest in specialty film in the Dallas area.
Houston (12 films)
Avenue Montaigne, Black Book, The Ex, Into Great Silence, Jindabyne, The Lives of Others, The TV Set, Waitress, The Valet, Year of the Dog, Shaun of the Dead, Hoax
Dallas (17 films)
Waitress, Red Road, Valet, Chalk, The Lives Of Others, Year of the Dog, Evil Dead III, The Ex, In The Land of Women, Hoax, Once, Wendell Baker Story, Jindabye, Away From Here, Mafioso, Black Book, The Namesake.

Houston has a bunch of museums. If you think that Houston's list of museums is half that...then so be it, but you are wrong. 17 films to 14 films. Doesn't matter. Dallas has more screens, so wouldn't you expect more films. Dallas may have several museum districts, but they all add up to Houston's one.
I don't know how you could call the River Oaks Theatre old and ratty. That thing is a landmark and has won some awards to go along with it.

Good grief. The museum thing is just another tidbit of misinfo, but I'll overlook it.
Aurora Picture Show
Rice Cinema
Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (shows art, foreign, indie films)
Jung Center
Domy Books
Talento Bilingue de Houston
plenty of film festivals and art galleries and cultural centers showing indie films
I've been to film screenings at Dean's Credit Clothing downtown and the former Mausoleum (now Helios) in the Montrose. This stuff is more organic here. If someone wants to put on a screening, they do! All over the place!

I know. I've noticed that as well. I guess they don't want you to forget where you're at and maybe mistake it for Hawaii or something.
As for Stormchasers, that's not a career for me. I'd get fired. "Now where did that guy go ?" .. "Uh, he said he had to go home early to pick the kids up and that someone else would need to drive the truck into the vortex of an F5 tornado"....."that guy is spineless, fire him and see if we can get another Aussie Alligator handler to take his place"
Absolutely love the movie though....
If you have a media room, this one is a must own. Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound is about as close as I ever want to get to one of these things.
I have to admit though, it must be amazing to actually see one. I can't think of anything that would make you feel more mortal and insignificant than a twister.
We better let the Houston guys get back to arguing about Museums or we'll get in trouble.

It's called indoctrination. The brainwashing keeps us Texas proud.
