I started an exercise program only to have my bp skyrocket in the weeks following. Does anyone know why this would happen? I thought exercise was good for blood pressure. I'm not talking about intense workouts, just moderate treadmill walking for 30 minutes a day or a few minutes with yoga.

Are there any good hypertension specialists in this area?
And, does an endocrinologist help with hypertension as well as with thyroid disorders, or do I need to see an internist?

Any helpful suggestions/referrals would be great!

Thanks.

Your really need to see a doctor. I don't know which kind, maybe a cardiologist? I would not ask for medical advice on a city/relocation forum.

Maybe ask for a doctor recommendation, but I would not seek medical advice here.

I see a cardiologist for blood pressure. And I know it can change several times during the day. Sometimes when you get on medication it can also change over time. Fortunately mine has been going down.

When and how are you taking your blood pressure?

bill is right.

Thank you for your replies.
First of all, I just wanted a good referral, since I asked my doctor here the same question and all I got was a "Humm."
I needed to know which direction to go. I don't have a heart problem. I've had a stress test and my heart is in great shape...

I think maybe I submitted in an inappropriate forum. I meant to ask for Medical referrals in Dallas area. I thought perhaps someone would be familiar and could direct me to a good doctor since I'm not from Dallas.
I really did not want to waste my time driving to a doctor that was horrible with patients, would repeat my question back to me and say "Humm" in reply.

I take my blood pressure at different times and I monitor it carefully. I'm only 42, and I've had a stroke (it runs in my family) and so I am very in tune with how my body feels. It's high, I know it. If it's low, I know it too. I've been on the same medication for 2 years--they just raised it, and maybe it's time to change it. Just to give a background. --But really, I just wanted to know also if anyone had experience-- and who they used as their doctor, not for advice, which I know is a huge medical decsion and requires testing.

So this is my first post and I probably did not post it correctly.. bear with me, I will learn. I found a website with a list of doctors, but which one to choose? A referral would help.

Thanks everyone who replied.

God bless,

cheleebean, this forum is where you would want to ask for a doctor referral and this forum is where you can start a topic as far as the blood pressure/exercise issue. Both forums can be very helpful and I'm sure there will be plenty of folks stepping forward to assist you.

My 43 year old friend goes there.....similar condition to yours.....he's been very happy with the care and interest they have shown in him.

Was it high before the exercising began? I can't see how your program could bring it to a skyrocketing stage. Do you remember the reading?

Thank you GayleTx, I will DEFINITELY check it out. I don't remember the exact reading, Canine*Castle... but it was high, and I've had problems with it staggering extremely low and extremely high, which wears me out. I am grateful for the replies. I'm really tired of trying to self-diagnose, and I need a doctor who knows his stuff and won't leave me guessing what is wrong with me. I am just plain tired. Thanks to the people who read this in the wrong forum and bear with me. Now, I will tip-toe out quietly.

Blood pressure usually increases during exercise and gradually returns to your pre-exercise level when you stop. If you have continued elevated blood pressure readings after you have stopped exercising, especially if the readings are HIGHER than your pre-exercise levels, this is considered abnormal. Actually, blood pressure tends to drop BELOW your pre-exercise level when you stop exercising to rest. Your blood pressure readings can vary throughout the day depending up your activity. But if you are noticing significant blood pressure swings while on medication, it really should be evaluated.

If your stroke was directly related to hypertension, you really shouldn't be doing an agressive exercise program without your doctor's OK. And if your doctor has given you the go ahead for the exercise, you need to let him/her know about your blood pressure swings. It sounds like you could benefit from a complete cardiac work up. If you have a PCP (even if you're not crazy about him/her) I would suggest you ask their office to make a referral for you. Usually you'll get an appt faster than if you self refer. While the office may have a list of their "preferred" cardiologist, if you find a recommended doc you want to see, you can ask the office to make the referral for you. Again, it's just because often times you will be seen faster than the self referred patients, especially if the doc's practice is very busy. Cardiology is a very competitive practice, the really good ones are usually booked in advance for follow ups and seeing new patients is usually by physician to physician referral.
