I am looking to rent a 2 bedroom place in the University Park/Highland Park/M Street area. Can someone advise of good complexes/communities to look at? Also, are all these areas good from a safety concern? I am looking to to pay a max for $1300-$1350 a month. I would ideally also like a garage

If you are looking for University Park, there are a lot of duplexes/fourplexes just to the north and to the west of SMU. You might be able to find something for that price.

If you are looking for the M Streets, there really are not any big complexes, mainly privately owned duplexes/fourplexes. Just drive around and you will see for rent signs or you can check realtor.com and click "rentals" and search zip 75206.

Anothe option might be the village apts www.thevillageapts.com, which is across 75 from UP.

There are some townhomes for rent south of Knox Street (along McKinney, Cole, Travis) also around Lower Greenville and Ross. East (southeast) of Knox on Henderson there are also a few. These are all just south of M-Steets and Highland Park. If you want to go further south and west you can search Oak Lawn.

I think bill has the best suggestion. I would also search those areas on craigslist, dallasnews.com and pick up a copy of The Dallas Observer.

In those areas you will be ner impossible to get a garage but you can get covered parking.
If your a student ask for a student discount.
There are lots of apts in that area what will fit within your budget.
Let us know if you need any assistance

Thanks all for the suggestions..

I'll be in the area driving around Friday night and hoping to get a place on Saturday. It is so hard to get a feel of a place from out of state, specially from a safety standpoint. I have read many reviews on apartmentratings.com (granted, I should take them with a grain of salt), where people mention their cars getting broken into and their apartments being broken into.

I really appreciate your all you feedback!

You can't really go by apartmentratings.com, a lot of the ratings are posted by competitor landlords, trying to "scare" people away from a certain property.

For example, I have seen postings on a Post Properties apartment, that say things like: "Well, this place is ok, but I wish I had rented at gables instead"...or, go to a review for a Gables property and you will see: "Well, I wish I had never moved into this Gables property, there is mold growing everywhere, and my car got broken into in the garage! But my friend rents at Post, and she is very happy..."

Obviously, these are fake postings, posted by rental agents at competing properties.

There are some apartments/town homes one street south of the Lovers Lane/Inwood intersection, along Greenway Blvd, Boaz and Eastern Ave. I have no idea how much they cost, I do think one of them has covered parking. . The one along Eastern is brand new I believe. This area would be just to the west of the tollway & UP/HP.
