Best place to rent a lake-front property for a weekend (not too far from Dallas area)
Given the proximity of Labor Day and the searching I have done so far, I don't anticipate being able to find any availability for a cabin or lake house rental for that weekend.
However, we may want to stay somewhere on an area lake in the future for a weekend. Can anyone make a recommendation as to which lake is best and also who to rent through (resort-owned property, individual-owned property, etc)? Must allow dogs, btw. Many thanks.

I think Possum Kingdom would be a nice place for a getaway... about 2 hours from the metroplex... is that too far?
Bailey's Crystal Bay Cabins on Possum Kingdom Lake - Lakefront Cabin Rentals
Closer to Dallas is Lake Tawakoni and Lake Lavon but they don't have any cabins for rent.
An alternative is to rent a trailer/Winnebago and park in one of the campgrounds that have waterfront access.

Grapevine has a wonderful campground called The Vineyards that is right on the lake. They do have 5 cabins for rent, but they book really early! We were able to rent one when my husband's family visited and everyone really enjoyed it. Here's their website:

check out cedar creek--about an hour to 45 min SE of Dallas
lots of places that rent
check out VRBO and lakehouse.com for rentals
Cedar Creek is busy on weekends but not that busy during the week--like most lakes anywhere
not that much to do in Gun Barrel City or other local towns--althrough there is a movie house and some restaurants--Tyler is not that far...
if you are interested in Possum Kingdom check out the FTW board--post not too long ago about staying there--Cliff Resort is best place on the lake for renting a condo
Granbury is nice town for retreat -- has lake--don't know there are that many lake-side rentals

Ok, thanks for the great responses. Still looks like for most of these places bringing pets will be a problem...even if they're allowed on the property they're not really allowed in cabins, condos, what-have-you.

You will have a very difficult time finding a lakehouse to rent that allows pets. Even private/VRBO owners will not allow it just because there are too many people who will let their dog go swim in the lake, run through the mud, and then they will let him come in and lay on the carpet.

Lake Texoma is just about 45 min. north of you. Lots of different rental places in all price ranges around it....I would think some of the 'fishing camp' type marinas might allow pets.

I think Lake Texoma is more than 45 min north--
there are places in Cedar Creek that allow pets -- we were going to rent one but decided to so to New Braunfels area instead...
