start

476 crimes reported for the past calender year in beat 217 (Lakewood Proper). Of these 51 are burglaries. I counted 26 burglaries in Lakewood proper for 2008 YTD.

I came across the above website a few months ago and this one: City of Dallas Interactive Maps .

It's really shocking how much crime goes on in Dallas. The scary part is that Lakewood had one of the least amounts of crime at 476 crimes reported (more than 1 per day average) and 51 burglaries (about once a week average).

If you look at the bad parts of town, especially southern Dallas, it is really scarry.

I am a big fan of Lakewood and all of East Dallas, but crime is a major problem and the DPD does not do much about it. I myself have been a victim several times in the past 2 years and the police only take a report over the phone, never coming out to investigate.

Luckily most of these crimes are theft and garage burgalries, and not violent crime. If there were violent crime in East Dallas like there is in the bad parts of town, I would move (sadly) to the burbs or maybe a small place in the Park Cities.

Highland Park has its own police force, and they do a hell of a job. Crime in the Park Cities is almost nonexistent. I know this sounds hard to believe but some places can be in, near, and even surrounded by Dallas and still be safe.

Bill that is what LNA president Henda Salmeron reported at the last meeting at Times Ten Winery in July.

I guess this is proof that an active community and good alert neighbors are the best crime deterent.

Better than any gate or guard.

In our little Mayberry the gossip grapevine contributes to safety. The Lakewood "Mom-fia" (unflappable since 1928) sees and hears all.

Although in my 5 years of living in Dallas, the only crime I experienced was during the 1 year I lived in HP. So it definitely can happen.
