Best areas of Cedar Hill?
Hello! My husband and I are looking to move to Dallas from Minnesota. He would be working in Lancaster, and we are considering living in Cedar Hill. Are there any areas of the town we should stay away from or areas that are good? We are a young family, so our housing price range is only up to about $130K (which will still buy us a much nicer house than we could buy in St. Paul!). Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as we have 2 young children and want them to live in a safe area

I know it hasn't been that long since you posted your question, but by the early morning, there were still no responses and it was about halfway down on the Dallas Forum front page. I wanted to help you out by posting a brief response, so your question would be bumped back up near the top of the front page and more people would see it.
In regards to Cedar Hill, I think that is a very nice community and a great place to live. Before moving to Lancaster in late 2006, my family and I did look at quite a few homes in Cedar Hill and most were nice. Your price range is slightly higher than ours was, so I don't think that you will have any problems finding a good home in a well-kept neighborhood. As for specific neighborhoods, I know that there are a few posters on this forum who live in Cedar Hill and know the city better than I do. They are proud residents and I'm sure that they would be glad to help you out.
The southern suburbs of Dallas (Cedar Hill, DeSoto, Lancaster, etc.) are generally nice communities. They are fast-growing and have seen a lot of development lately. The housing prices are reasonable as well.
I hope this helps and welcome to Texas!

The best response I can give at this time it to check out the school ratings since you have two kids as I'm sure that's the most important thing for you.

I would also add Grand Prairie to the list.

I think for a nicer/safer area your price range would have to go above 150K unless you were looking for a 1200 sq ft place in a nice area or a townhouse. Its cheaper in Texas but not ridiculously cheaper. If you come and rent for a while you may be able to take advantage of a real estate auction/foreclosure or even a builder inventory sale. I recommend not buying right away so you can research while "living" here.
There are plenty out door activities in Cedar Hill for you and the family.
Look on mansfield road along Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prairie. Also look along beltline road east of 75 in Cedar Hill for homes in that range.
There are other areas but this is what I can come up with for now.

there are plenty of great neighborhoods at your price range in cedar hill.
check out frost hollow, or high pointe (high point elementary school is recognized), or even waterford oaks (waterford oaks elementary has been recognized since it was opened)
all elementary schools in cedar hill are either exemplery or recognized
good luck

They are usually the higher class ones that have money, but their kids can still act ghetto sometimes. The CHPD are always out in full force which can be a good or a bad thing depending on how you look at it, crime is low, but don't so much as have a license plate light bulb out or you're getting pulled over & ticketed for something.
