Default Why do they make it so difficult?

I am a South-African and I currently reside there, but I'm planning to come over to the US soon to be with my fiancee, who is a born and bred american.

She is filing a petition for a fiancee VISA for me at the Immigration Services. We've got all the required documentation ready, and she is posting it to the following address as she lives in Denton:

USCIS

Vermont Service Center

Attn: I-129F

75 Lower Welden Street

St. Albans, VT 05479-0001

The thing is that we can't find any numbers to contact where you speak to a person who actually deals in these things and who can give advice and explain little details.

We don't know how long to expect to wait for the petition to be processed which means she is sending it off, and then we seem to just have to wait indefinitely and hope something happens.

We planned for me to be there by Dec-Jan, but honestly... who knows when exactly I'll be able to leave to be with her.

If anyone has any info that could shed a little light, it will be so sooo appreciated.

You need to hire an immigration attorney. USCIS does not give advice on anything. They only process the forms.

I think that's pretty lame. So in other words, if you read the instructions for how to get the ball rolling on the USCIS website, and you are not clear on something, then tough ****? I have to hire an attorney to get a few simple answers?

I'm used to being on top of things, but I guess I'll have to give it a little time with this one. They will probably contact us once they have received our petition.

They don't have a phone number that you can call from overseas but your fiancee can call them from here since it's an 800 #. The other resort is for you to check for status through the local consulate.

How Do I Bring My Fiancé(e) to the United States?

The INS will tell you that it takes typically about 3-4 months but I tell you that it takes about 6-8. This is if there are no objections found at all.

Thanks Naima. I sincerely hope it's the former.

You don't have to hire an attorney however an attorney is a fairly reliable (but not guaranteed) source of information.

USCIS, isn't very customer oriented so you won't get lots of info out of them besides what's on their web site.

Lots of interesting info can be found at a dedicated immigration discussion board like ImmigrationPortal Forums
