"Ghetto" is a world wide term & actually has its root meaning in Europe during the Nazi era. Your bigotry is not welcome on this forum.

Good Lord. I was out walking alone for several blocks at 11 pm very near Fair Park from an art gallery last Thursday. I have walked around galleries within sight of the front gate at FP around those times and gone to Minc, Double-Wide, The Amsterdam and I used to hang out at Expo a lot. There aren't any gangs running around there. Even when I go to the fair I park under the rather dark I-30 bridge over Commerce. $750,000 townhomes are a couple of blocks up (T.O. lives there).
Back to the subject. You can find the best of both worlds by locating in a Dallas neighborhood with an Austin vibe such as areas in North Oak Cliff and Old East Dallas (Vickery Place and Junius Heights for instance - and we have a lake). Also some people have never heard of Chalk Hill, SMU Hilltop, Hillcrest, Flag Pole Hill, T.P. aka Woodrow Hill? It ain't the Hill Country but...

I agree with most posters here, other than artsyguy. He seems to have a anti-Austin agenda. Sort of like Lakewooder who has a anti-anything other than Lakewood agenda. . Huh, Austin has a lake, you should visit it sometime.
Anyway, as a natural born Dallasite, I should be pro-Dallas. However, I like Austin better and if my grand babies would come and live with me, I would live there. Austin has a great Parrott-Head group who party every weekend. Fins Up! I would definitely live out on or near Lake Austin or just out loop 222 or Bee Caves Road. The traffic is horrible, sort of like it is here in Dallas, so don't plan on commuting across town or it will wear you out. Besides, all the best play grounds are just west of the Austin area such as Marble Falls, Fredericksburg, Kerrville, Hill Country Wine Trails, etc...

Hey I mentioned North Oak Cliff...that new Bolsa market and restaurant looks very Austin to me. Not to mention Bishop Arts.
Korel, you ought to march with the Parrott - Heads at the Greenville Ave. St. Patrick's Day parade! I don't think Austin can match that parade!

There is a small minority of people who live in Dallas but have some affinity for Austin. Obviously they don't want to live in Austin badly enough to actually leave Dallas.
They explain away the obvious contradiction by claiming there is some overriding responsibility or reason that, unfortunately, keeps them from the city they love.
Psychologically, you evaluate people on the basis of what they do, not what they tell you.
I recall the old saying... "Be Careful What You Wish For... You might Get It".

I have several friends who grew up with me who live in Austin. One lives on Lake Austin. Another is a "Dell-ionaire" retired in his 40s with three charitable foundations, a couple live out north, one lived around Congress and the warehouse area but has moved back to Lakewood to take care of his mom. None of them fit the demographics of the original poster. I would say most people in Texas like Austin (except the Aggies). I like to visit Austin but I think I would get bored there and I would feel a bit trapped. It goes back to what ace is saying.

I'm the same way. I like to visit Austin, but wouldn't ever want to live there. Its just not diverse enough for my tastes. I'm used to the big cities like Houston & Dallas which are a lot more cosmopolitan. Austin could be cosmopolitan too if it would ever let go of its stuck in the 60's hippie mentality it tries so hard to hold on to. For the people who say Austin is weird, it lost its "weirdness" decades ago when the big tech companies started moving in.

I wouldn't necessarily live in the city limits of Austin. Austin is a neat place to visit but I would live out west of the city. Possibly out around hiway 281 from Lampassas down to Borne. Moving wouldn't be until retirement. I have too many interest here in the DFW area to just pluck-up and move. Including grand babies.
Great Road House BBQ in Lampassas. Texmex in Burnet. Blue Bonnet Cafe in Marble Falls. I know all the great eateries up and down 281.

Why make you think Houston = more 20 year olds and Dallas = more 30 year olds?
