MDE is on a distinguished road
Lived in Houston for about two decades after my family moved there from KCMO. Have been in Dallas a little over a decade.

There are down-to-earth people in both cities. Dallas can seem a little more pretentious I think because the city is smaller and seems more intimate. I like the job market here, but truthfully it will probably attract more of the snobbish types.

In many ways, Houston is a blue-collar, get-it-done city. As a former Houstonian, the city makes me proud when it's on the big stage.

When the Rockets won the NBA championship, it led to a respectable celebration by people of all walks of life. There was no overturning cars, etc.

Similarly, when IKE recently damaged the city, there wasn't a lot of hidden tension that boiled to the surface. People pulled together and made the best of it.

The fourth largest city in the country, it's a lot more international than most people think. The size of its affordable housing market and its constant growth makes it more inviting to outsiders.

I know I'm snotty, but that's cuz I'm from Boston (as a PP noted). It's just too bad for you that I'm richer, cooler, better educated, better looking and better dressed than you grossly fat little beer swilling peons. Ferchrissakes, put up the bud, go to the gym, get a fashion consultant and a real job and you'll feel better about yourself!

I personally like the snotty women of Dallas. They're always better looking.

It's not so much that we're snottier than people in Houston, as it is that we're just better and you're just jealous.

^^^ Hopefully that was all a joke. I'm quite familiar with Boston.

Anyway, I think Austin is extremely laid-back (at least it used to be), Dallas is uptight, and Houston is in the middle.

And don't let anyone try to tell you it's because Houston is "blue-collar" (Austin isn't either). Because technically it's not, at least when you look up census stats. The only exception would be the industrial east-side suburb cities such as Channelview and Baytown.

Houston is actually quite modest (considering all it has to brag about) and self-sufficient. It's a local culture... you kind of won't fit in that well if you're not a lot that way yourself.

Are People in Dallas Really More Snotty than People in Houston??

It really depends on the people, as Boston above alludes.

I lived in Houston for twenty years then Dallas for ten. I'd prefer the more laid back Houston but Dallas is cool. You really can't compare the two. Different places and time.

I have been visiting Dallas since the year 2003 up to now and I can honestly say that the folks in Dallas are very kind and polite to me (even though I am from Oklahoma). Every time I go to Dallas, it feels like home to me and I am very comfortable with my surroundings. Texas man, what a state. I just love it.

Dallas is more snotty than New York City or Los Angeles for that matter.

In Europe, some say that the Belgians are the biggest snobs.

Why is that? Because they have inferiority complex compared to the other European capitals.

The Belgians can't compete with London or Paris or Milan. They know this.

You've got the same dynamic going on in Dallas. I've lived and worked in Manhattan. I've lived in in Encino California.

Go to an exclusive restaurent in these three cities and you'll see it first hand.

The Dallas atmosphere will be more elitist, more pretentious.

There's nothing but pasture here. Many have nothing better to do than got out and pose and flaunt their wealth and good looks.

Houston from what I gather is more laid back. More old money. They don't have to try as hard as Dallas does.

Is Dallas pretentious? No, but it does look down on provincial places such as Austin and Houston.

Dallas is not pretentious because it isn't pretending to be the capital city of the Southwest. It already is the capital city of the Southwest and the social behavior of its people reflects that fact. DFW is to Texas and the Southwestern states as London is to England or Paris is to France... the center of culture and business.

Most of the Federal regional government offices for the South-Central states is located in DFW, from housing offices to FBI to immigration to banking... National and international corporations have their offices here in DFW...

Dallas is not pretentious because it doesn't have to pretend.
