Hi All - We are moving down from an area of Chicago where a water softener is a MUST or everything will be coated in white film within a week.

Can anyone comment on the water in Collin County...specifically McKinney if possible. I hear a filtration system is recommended, but the builder said softeners are not common. True?

Thanks!

I haven't found it to be a problem and I grew up in Chicago with the whole water softner thing.

Although I'm jonesing to get another RainSoft system. We had it at our old house and I loved it. Not so much 'cuz the water was bad, but because it made it so much better. It's a whole house system and we ended up using less sugar for the sweet tea, less coffee grounds for the coffee, less shampoo in the shower, less soap in the washer etc since it was a much purer water.

We could have relocated it when we moved but we sold it with the house with the plan that we'll put one in the new house. DH is just a bit of a procrastinator.

Before you by a new RainSoft you should do some research about them. It seems that many people are unhappy with them.

we moved from southern az about 9 months ago where hard water was a serious problem. we live in wylie and i hear mixed reviews from people saying u need it while some say u dont need a softener. anyways, we had our builder put in a loop and a drain for us in the garage n bought a softener from lowes (whirlpool brand i think?) n i installed it. lowes will install it for u and the labor n parts all works out to roughly $150. anyway, the point here is if u noticed a problem before, then over time, u will probably see a problem here. while the water might not be as ahrd here as chicago, over time, you will certainly notice some build up. so u may as well put one in. we have had no problems with our softener and it seems to work great.

Sorry, I don't understand. I actually owned one and was thrilled with it. Are you saying they've changed the product?

There's no need for it here. Our water is not very hard and it doesn't leave a film on things.
West Texas water is another story!!!

I actually have been noticing hard water stain left on my Tupperware in my dishwasher. Every time I use the Dishwasher there hard water stains left there. I live in an Apt in Richardson, so my water source is probably different than Mckinney's.

Water in Plano and Richardson is gross. It's full of algae which makes it taste like dirt. A filter is imperative. We also notice it leaves white spots on our dishes. Lastly, rain or unfiltered water from lawn sprinklers leave a nasty film on your car.

I only notice the algae once a year when the lake turns over. And to me it's a temporary thing that signals the moving of the calendar.
