Default State Fair of Texas

Who has been so far?

We went yesterday (Tuesday Dr Pepper can day AND 5 coupon ride day ).

Well, in the Texas Bldg Borden is not making those AWESOME yeast rolls
But you can get a FREE small ice cream cone and Borden still has drinks for $1 and of course Elsie is there.

Did not try the Fried Banana Split or the Chicken Fried Bacon. Saw someone eating the bacon. Okay, it is pieces about 2-3" long and really THICK bacon that is coated and deep fried and the guy was dipping it in BBQ sauce. ew

I did have the Waffle Balls - YUM I want to make those at home. Those are GOOD! Even the 13 yo that was "yuck" loved them. They did not have that heavy fried taste or feel. REALLY yummy. Only one place to get them over by the Automobile bldg.

Besides a Fletchers that was the only fried food we had ........oh, and a Funnel Cake. Must have a Funnel Cake.

Finally rode the Texas Skyway. That was fun. We sat facing Downtown both times. Your admission includes two rides so it can be Round Trip. One end is right at the very end of the Midway by the Crazy Mouse and the other is just before Big Tex. So if your over there at the far end of the Midway and craving a Fletchers you can hop on and go get one pretty fast. Nice ride.

We went yesterday, also. Best weather ever, for us. Completely lovely day.

Seemed a little slower than usual, as I noticed the main parking inside was not yet full when we showed up in the afternoon. But we park in 'hood yards, anyway.

Big excitement for us -- Our little boy (4. y.o.) got to be the human cannonball in the Backyard Circus -- so I got to do the "catching." The kids liked the big sandbox, as well. Pee wee rodeo was down due to being wet from rain. The kids always like the goats and the rest of critters you can feed and pet, as well.

The kids and Heather did the Merry-go-round. We probably should have done the Skyway like you said, Mom. We always talk about doing the Ferris Wheel, but one of the kids always change their mind while in line. btw, this year is the first time I have ever seen ALL the lights working on the Ferris Wheel, and it looked good.

Made the horrid mistake of wandering into the middle of the auto display mess. About like wandering through the middle of an LBJ traffic jam on foot. Absolute hell, and lets me know why I await eagerly for the demise of the automobile.

Went last Friday. Had a Fletcher's and a funnel cake...did all the traditional stuff (auto show, Texas Star, etc.) The new Illumination Sensation could be better, but was decent. LOVED the parade - this is my first time to actually spend time watching it...it was great.

I'll go back on Sunday to spend some more time there. I love the Fair...have been going since I was a kid. As a college student who now lives here in Dallas, I get season passes from Kroger. Great deal: Season pass, free movie ticket, and a ticket to Six Flags Holiday in the Park for $29.95. You can only get the deal from Kroger, so make a trip there before heading out to the fair.

We also went yesterday, if your son was in the last show of the night then we saw him!

We tried the bacon, it was not worth it and I wonder how it got to win the top prize. The pieces weren't that thick and you couldn't really taste the bacon with all the "chicken fry". My DH tried the fire and ice and liked that. In addition to that we had a corn dog, tater twisters and cheesy garlic bread. All very yummy.

Car show, did it. It's a requirement for my hubby, his bro and dad. The midway is what I'll equate to doing LBJ on foot. Completely jam packed, I got a headache during our time there. My daughter enjoyed her two kiddie rides though and the nieces enjoyed the rides they went on. Why we didn't think to ride the skyway since it was only 5 coupons is beyond me. I guess we just weren't thinking.

Did not like the illumination show, not quite worth our time but oh well. My daughter did like hearing the song "Life is a Highway" that's her all time favorite.

All in all the fair was once again a fun time.

Default Livestock

What kind of livestock do they have at the fair? Do they have barns for people to walk through?

We went on Monday and had a great time. It was not crowded at all due to the weather being bad in the morning, but by 10:30 or so, it stopped raining and it was the best weather I've ever had at the Fair. The kids rode a ton of rides with their daddy while I watched and waved. Of course we had a Fletcher's. Did the petting zoo, the car show, etc....
The highlight of my day was the fried s'mores. Oh.My.Goodness. Sinfully good. Like a s'more wrapped in a funnel cake.
The fair is so expensive, but it's one day that we throw the budget out the window and do as much as we can.
I wish I knew about the Kroger season pass deal. That's a fantastic deal!

I must be missing something. It was our first time to the Fair and I left feeling very let down. The amount of fried food was not even funny, come on Texas, where was the chili and bbq food? It was like any fair I've been to but just massive. The truly only original thing was the amount of fried junk served there. We loved the Ferris Wheel and got great pictures of downtown. The auto show kept husband and older kids busy. But I came away thinking 'is that it?'. I don't like to be so negative as I love this area but the fair is mainly a place to eat. Nothing new unfortunately.
