I don't mind the big stores here and there but I detest that they are so ubiquitous that you hardly know which part of the country you're in anymore. I like to see what's new to me when I go to another state. I don't want it to look just like where I came from. Whenever I go to Denver to visit my brother they have the same ol' stores that we have for the most part.

That's called "economies of scale" and comes with generally lower prices, which is something that seems to be engrained into American society. How can we get something cheaper? It comes with the same stores being placed everywhere so they can leverage their suppliers better - whether that be the products they sell, display shelving, construction contracts or cash registers.

I agree that it's unfortunate, but it's what we have and I don't see things changing. Americans, in general, are cheap. I'm guilty as charged.

Brian

Yes, it's a good thing we don't have any Wal*Marts here! BTW, the Minyard's manager had brain cancer and passed away - the neighborhood had some fund raisers to pay his medical bills: 'Hy-Top Night' to be held at Lakewood Bar and Grill | Dallas | pegasusnews.com

I know you dislike Walmart, but if you click here:

Walmart.com - Store Finder Results

You'll see that Walmart has 7 stores within Dallas City Limits, not including their Sam's Club. (I can hear the response now, "But not in the greatest place on Earth: Lakewood.")

My favorite Walmart Superscenters are the one near Belt Line and Montfort close to Addison and the one on Dallas Parkway close to Park Blvd in Plano. I find their Walmarts nice places to shop for food in my opinion.

Yeah but those are the little Wal-Mart groceries -- believe me they would stir up a hornet's nest if they ever tried to come in here...unless maybe they bought out the Far West night club site...

sigh. Yes, I know, that's the reality of American life for good or for bad. I do like some of the box stores myself, I just dislike the generic atmosphere of it all. Can't have it both ways, I guess.
