Well it's really the oldest El Chico, but they decided that Lakewood was getting 'too upscale' for that 'brand'. It's still El Chico if you close your eyes (and Paul still works there -- 50 years) and don't mind the prices having doubled. The food is pretty good, but no Saltillo plate.

A friend of mine hates the change so much she calls it "Catina Latrino" but she still goes.

I just don't go to Cantina Laredo; I can't stand that yuppified Tex-Mex garbage. Ojeda's, baby. Ojeda's. Or El Fenix.

I hear what you are saying -- you really should try Matt's (he's the son of Matt Sr in Austin) The Tex Mex Chef || Matt Martinez Jr.

I may this weekend, who knows

The bf didn't seem impressed with Lakewood but to be fair, it WAS dark and all we saw was up and down Abrams. I showed him Woodrow so he could appreciate its size and age, and he said the neighborhood around it was 'ghetto'.

HOLY COW! I am a Native Texan and I can't believe what everyone seems to think is important. Yes Dallas is probably the most materialistic city on the planet, yes, Texas has produced some of the most beautiful women on the planet. This is a foregone conclussion and no one has ever denied or challenged that. The real issue should be how outsiders are changing our entire way of life. Greedy big business and out of state developers are bringing droves of Transplants into our state and the way we live is being effected. TRANSPLANTS ARE WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS STATE!!! I hope I said that loud enough. We should be concerned with our Southern way of life and Texas Pride is deteriorating instead of what class of Benz I drive. Midwesterners especially and other transplants are bringing their rude and abrasive attitudes with them. This is not based on one bad apple or one unfortunate encounter with one of them. There are stats that are starting to show the numbers and they are not favorable. Besides now having the worst pollution, the highest overextended credit, due to Texan Wannabes moving here, the worst traffic and an exploding crime rate, Dallas (& Houston, Ft.Worth, Austin all of what once were great cities in Texas), are being listed as the most Unfriendly places to live with the rudest drivers. Quality of life and an over population of Outsiders is what we should be most worried about, not what Tex-Mex place is better. (eventhough as a Texan I do know how important that is)

Not transplants here and there, I know some fine ones, but the sheer numbers of them, especially the ones who don't appreciate what we have here.

Ever been to LA? ... or any large city in California?

And as far as TexMex food, someone mentioned El Chico. I'm sorry but that's about as crappy as TexMex gets, and I fully understand why you can't find them here. All y'all in north and east Texas, please do yourselves a favor and come down here some day so you can get some real TexMex.

Just to folllow up before a person from Chicago or Wisconcin sends a response telling me how friendly they are or how they love the Cowboys...First of all, I have commuted to Chicago 4 times a month for the last 6 yrs for my job. There used to be no mistaking when I landed back in Dallas, now it's hard to tell the difference!
Also, I took my son to a "LOCAL" establishment to watch a Cowboy game...as in DALLAS Cowboys where we were barraged by a foul mouthed cheesehead next to us who proceeded to say things like F-Dallas and how she ("SHE", I use that word loosely), wished the Cowboys would all die in a wreck. This was in front of a 10 yr old boy and she was (or at least looked like she may have been in her 40's it was hard to tell with the beer bottle sticking out of her mouth). Someone wrote about "homely" looking women? Gentlemen get a load of the Midwest women, Yikes, must be something in the water! No folks, this is not what I am basing my opinion on, when I say Transplants are what is wrong with this state. It is only one tiny, tiny, miniscule, example of stories that I have and that I have heard. Most Texans are to nice to tell these Transplants that they are not welcome here, but you would be amazed at the stories that a city research co. has heard about rude Outsiders living here in Texas. They don't care, they move here, they breed, they bring grandma and the dog over in their mini-vans they pollute our cities buy our land. I agree with one who wrote about the empty strip malls and how these smaller outskirt cities will no longer be the "IT" place to live. These out of towners don't have the same standards as us Texans do and therefore, builders are throwing up sub standard communities for all the sub standard people that are coming here and they are giddy about the 200,000. house that would cost 600,000 somewhere else. They live here without the pride and expectations of greatness that we have always had.
God Bless America and Keep Texas Beautiful, Put a Midwesterner on a Bus!!!!!
