Moving to Dallas From Austin
Hi All,
My family, I, my wife and 4 yr. old, will be moving to Dallas in the next 6 months. We are a single car family and would like to keep it that way, maybe buy a scooter. I will be working near 2250 Stemmons Trail area. The question is where is a good place to live keeping in mind that I would prefer not having to buy another car, ie no long commutes.
I am familiar with Plano as we a have relative near there, but the commute from Plano would be ugly....
Any thoughts and ideas?

Look into the northeastern part of Dallas. The area is called Lake Highlands and it's under the Richardson School District.

I think for the most part you will have to break down and buy a car unless you live close to a dart rail or bus stop. I looked on a map and see it is close to where my husband use to work at years ago and memory serving, I don't recall really there being several places to choose from to live, especially with a 4 year old. Maybe someone knows of any apartments but remembering that area, even if you found a nice area, you still would have to have a car to get around. I think you should inlist the help of realtor to help you get the areas figured out that are great to raise a 4 year old. The only area that seems to stick in my head that is neighborhood is Turtle Creek. Good luck.

Texan#1 and stargazer, Thank you for your replies. What is Irving like? This is an area I was considering as it is very close to the office.
Thank you

Hmm, I hope you didn't get the job I'm waiting to hear about Not too far away from where you'll be.
If it helps, I've been looking seriously in the Valley Ranch area, 10 miles or so to the northwest. Don't know what you price range is, but I"m pretty familiar with that part of Dallas and yes you'd have a pretty serious commute from Plano.
Valley Ranch and Coppell are the two areas I've been looking seriously in.

Phallo,
This is more of a transfer from the Austin office to Dallas offce. At this point we are looking at trying to keep the commute to less than 10 miles....Definitely Plano is out of the question....

Irving is great. The northern part of the city (from hwy 183 and up) is aesthically nicer than the southern portion. Irving is a diverse city that has people from all over the world because of Las Colinas and it's proximity to DFW airport. Las Colinas is a beautiful masterplanned community that is home to many world headquarters. I also like Irving's location because it is in the middle of the metroplex.
