Default Job Transfer from VB to Dallas

My job is transferring me from Virginia Beach to Dallas. I will be working at the VA Medical Center on S. Lancaster.

I have a wife and two boys, a tenth and eighth grader. We are hoping to find an apartment for 6 months until we find the right area to settle in. We both were in the military years ago and we are tired of moving. We are in our early 40's.

Please give me some options on apartments and cities to settle in with schools in consideration. I am willing to commute 20-25 miles.

Thanks!

There are several suburbs south of Dallas that you might want to consider – Lancaster, DeSoto, Glenn Heights, Red Oak, and Waxahachie. What is your suggested price range for an apartment? There are a few nicer complexes in the larger cities, but you may also be able to possibly find a sizable rental house or duplex for a similar price.

I am willing to pay up to $1,500 monthly for rent.

Thanks for responding.

This one might not have much input as most posters seem to relate more to the north half of Dallas County. My google search shows the VA address as 4500 S Lancaster Rd, 75216. This is not a highly sought after part of town. Traveling through the downtown hiways can have serious delays through extended rush hours.

If I were to move in that direction, I'd head outside the Interstate Loop, I20/I625. At least if you're looking for better apartments and schools. I'd point you in the direction of Duncanville, DeSoto, Cedar Hill, Red Oak, south Arlington, Mansfield. Even Joe Pool Lake area.

There's a bike rally each year (or used to be) called Hammer the Hills in Duncanville. Runs near Joe Pool Lake.

This site is so cool. I really appreciate all the info. I did not include safety, but yes that is very important. I heard down south they have a MARTA train that will take me directly to the VA Medical Center.

Thanks so much!

DART - Dallas Area Rapid Transit (www.dart.org - always requires the www.)

You want the Blue Line. Looks like right now the south end is at I20. But goes up into the northern part of the county. If you're taking DART then your options are considerably more broad.

A monthly pass is only $50, unlimited passage.

I know several people that use the VA center and live in the northern part of the county using DART to commute. The only issue is limited late night service so an issue is possible on some shifts.

You will find many more options for housing and schools if you are willing to commute.

For a family of 4 and in your price range, you can find a house for lease instead of an apartment if that is more appealing to you. South Grand Prairie has some nice areas too.
