Default from N.C. to Texas

My family will be moving to N. Dallas area at the end of the school year. My husband has an apartment in Frisco and has shown me that area. We like the "country" feel and want a good school system for my 3 daughters. We have been told Prosper would be a good choice. We also looked at Celina, Little Elm, Rockwall and Heath. Does anyone have a favorite or am I missing an area?

I like all of those you mentioned except Little Elm. If you want small town and smaller schools, I would consider Celina and Prosper. Rockwall is more suburban. I don't know anything about Heath. Little Elm? Yuk. Not a fan of Little Elm. Frisco is suburban, too. Part of Little Elm feeds into Frisco schools. That's better, but still.

Do you have to worry about a commute? Celina is way out there.

My husband is in furniture sales, he travels a lot of the Dallas area. Commuting is not really a problem. Thanks for the reply.

Hey now I've lived in Little Elm for 9 years now and there's nothing wrong here that won't be better in the next couple of years. The biggest gripe is the traffic but by 2011 Eldorado Parkway will be 4 lanes from the Lake Lewisville Toll Bridge all the way to the Dallas North Tollway and by 2012 FM 423 will be 4 lanes from 121 in The Colony to Highway 380.

If you're buying on a budget you can get damn near the same house you can buy in Frisco only you aren't paying for the name Frisco and it'll cost you up to 40% less.

As for the schools the elementary schools are excellent, junior high is so-so and the high school is not that great. There's a lot of staff turnover in Little Elm because the district can't afford to pay the teachers like the other more affluent burbs.

Here's a quick summary of each city you talked about:

Prosper is a small town that is growing fast. It is just north of Frisco up Preston. The schools are good and the high school football team won state this year in 3A. With all the growth, there is many new housing developments in the area and there is a lot of shopping nearby in Frisco and more coming to Prosper soon. Prosper definitely has the small town feel and its family-oriented. Deion Sanders, who plays for the Dallas Cowboys, lives there.

Celina is also a small town that is fast growing and just north of Prosper. It is not as fast growing though as Propser as it is farther out. The schools are good and there is some nice neighborhoods there. Definitely has a small town feel and is family-oriented.

Rockwall is a large, fast growing suburb of Dallas. It doesn't have much of a small town feel like it use too because of all the growth. It is located just east of Dallas on I-30. The schools are good and there is a lot of new housing developments with some really nice houses. There is also a lot of stores and restaurants there. It's very family-oriented and close to Dallas.

Heath is a small town that is fast growing and just south of Rockwall. The students in Heath attend Rockwall schools, which are very good. There is a lot of new housing developments out there with nice houses that are on larger lots, but land prices are a bit higher in Heath than Rockwall. Rockwall is very close for shopping and restaurants. It definitely has a small town feekl and very family-oriented.

Little Elm is just northwest of Frisco and small, but fast growing. It definitely will not be small for very much longer. There is a lot of housing developments there with nice houses. And there is a lot of new shopping and restaurants coming soon there. Frisco, which has every store you could think of, is very close by. The schools there are good and it is family-oriented. They do have some traffic problems there getting in and out of Little Elm during rush hour.

As you can see, there are many choices, so i suggest that your family look at each one of these options and then decide on which one you like the best.

Hope this helps!

We moved from Aiken,SC 18 months ago. What part are you guys coming from?

BUT I would also like to add to the OP.......maybe also Mckinney would be a good fit for you. There are some nice neighborhoods off 380 which is approx. 5 miles from the North dallas tollway. The neighborhoods are in all different price points. Neighborhood names: Tuckerhill (BEAUTIFUL!!! but I think this may be Prosper) we did a tour of homes there this summer and they are amazing. La Cima--nice and located in SBR-- Drees is a builder and I think also Darling Homes. Ridgecrest--Drees and Highland homes--very nice neighborhood. Wren Creek --part of SBR Highland and Darling homes. With the exception of Tuckerhill I know these neighborhoods are filled with kids.

Good luck to everyone with their moves!!
