Default Wondering about the weather/seasons in DFW area

Hello, my husband has a job op in Dallas and I have done research on housing, schools, traffic, the whole "where to live" thing, but I am not able to find what I am looking for regarding the weather.

I know it will be hot hot hot late spring thru early fall, but are there "seasons" in DFW area? I mean, do the leaves turn, plants die, is there frost? How cool does it get? Does it ever snow? Is the winter rainy or dry and just a bit cooler than the rest of the year? I lived in Minnesota all but 1 1/2 years of my life, I am currently living in Hawaii. I miss the seasons so much, to me, each season means a new beginning, I have felt so of kilter living here, every day is the same, summer, fall, winter, spring, except for the 3 days a month there is rain on my part of the island.

What are the seasons like, is there a noticable change?

There are definitely seasons. Spring is short, summer is long and winter is autumn - That sums up the weather here for me, basically. Winters in DFW will bring an occasional icing, snow maybe once a year but it will likely melt within 24 hours. Winter temps are usually 30s at night, 40s-50s during the day with a few days with highs in the 30s. The leaves don't start changing until november, but they do, and they will fall in december. The trees are leaf-less and the grass is brown (except for certain neighborhoods that spend $$$ to put down winter grass) until february. Spring is nice but seems short as the temperatures climb all-too-quickly back into the summer levels of 80s-90s until november again.

Some people love the weather here, it's mostly mild, lots of sun with occasional rains and at least some division of seasons (moreso than the southern parts of the state). But I got tired of it a long time ago, personally, I just want more spring, autumn and winter time... but that's just me.

This is an interesting site about weather events. Just pick the state, then the county, and then the weather events about which you're interested.

NCDC Storm Events-Select State

Dallas has a very long and hot summer with many very humid days. The heat begins in May and doesn't end until October.

The winters are fabulous. There may be quite a few cold days, but they're intermixed with warm days which makes for a nice change. Yes, Dallas gets ice and snow occasionally, but it isn't a big deal.

The leaves turn colors a bit, but not like where you're from. Some Autumns are better than others.

Spring begins the humid days and the chances for tornadoes rise, but again, most people don't worry too much about them. I am the exception to that. I don't worry so much as respect Mother Nature and her fury.

The temperatures through the year can range from 113 down to below zero (rarity), but those are the extremes. I would say the normal range is 103 to 25 in any given summer or winter. The averages are more like 96 in July and 35 in January.

Rainfall for the entire year is usually (an average) about 36" or 77 days in the year. Most of the rain occurs in the Spring and Autumn....usually. Summers lack desperately in rainfall.

I hope that gives you a little idea of the climate.

Yes, I would agree with Canine Castle and rdfw. Dallas definitely has 4 seasons, but not as "pronounced" as some places. We have winter to be sure, but it is mild. As you already know, summers are beastly hot.

From about December to February we go in and out of winter all the time. It will be 80 degrees for 1-2 days then it will be 30 degrees for 1-2 days. It changes constantly. But the trees do change colors and the grass does die just like it does up north. We definetly have seasons. I wish we had more snow but then again I am thankful we dont have much winter weather causing horrible driving conditions. The best part of wionter is when we get those days when the high is around 55-60. Those days are PERFECT.
