My wife, daughter, and I are possibly relocating to DFW from San Antonio and would like some info on good places to live. My wife will be working from home but her territory is the entire Dallas and Fort Worth area. I was thinking about something like Arlington just because it is in between Dallas and Fort Worth. What are your thoughts on the Arlington area? Other ideas? We're looking to buy in the $160k-185k range. Good schools, shopping, etc. Thanks!!

Arlington schools aren't that great.

What else would you recommend? We're looking for newer homes/areas in that price range close to shopping and restaurants.

I would look at the Hust/Euless/Bedford area for a home in that price range.

Default Dozens of possibilities in many cities

You may have already considered other areas - Duncanville, Midlothian, Grapvine (mentioned in another post), Benbrook, Mansfield, etc. Take a look at some of the cities if you have a chance. Schedule a trip to drive neighborhoods. There really isn't any substitute to actually being in the subdivision and seeing it with your own eyes. Good Luck.

HEB ISD has some great schools but there is not a lot of new construction in SFH ...some of Euless is not so great...the area s of Hwy 10 is technically in FTW but has HEB schools...
Hurst and Bedford north of the freeway are usually safer bets

Birdville ISD is pretty good district and there is some new construction but not in that price range...the Watauga area is in Birdville ISD and maybe another district--some areas of it are pretty nice

the towns to the south of the Metroplex that tstal mentioned are not ones I would really suggest--schools are not considered that good in comparison with others in the DFW area and their location is not best for someone traveling DFW area...Mansfield is probably the best option there and there is probably some newer tract housing in your price range but I would be very careful about the construction and the area/schools--there have been lot of foreclosures in Mansfield area in past 2 yrs despite its growth path and could be lot of rental properties hiding away in some subdivisions which usually is not good indication ...
These are top ranked ISDs in Metroplex (IMO and based on stats and other people's comments)

Southlake-Carroll--out of your price range

Grapevine-Colleville--the houses in Grapevine in your price range are going to be older and in borderline areas for changing demographics for the most part--you would have to do some careful research

Coppell--probably out of your price range and no new construction really but pretty well located, quality town with parks and shopping/retail

HEB ISD Hurst/Euless/Bedford--older district--not lot of new construction--some iffy areas--but quality education especially when you consider the numbers of low-socio-economic students in their programs--good teacher stability--lots of programs for enrichment/high achievers

Birdville ISD--Hurst and North Richland Hills areas--newer construction is probably out of your price range -- this district sort of flew under the radar until about 8 yrs ago when lots of growth/housing developed--some good/some bad but location is good for getting around the metroplex--close to anything you would need--shopping/medical/parks/churches

Keller ISD--newer homes more expensive, schools vary--need to check area carefully because there is mix of old/new--Keller ISD spills over 377 into Fort Worth city limits--those areas have Keller mailing address but are not IN Keller--totally a marketing ploy a decade or so ago when the subdivisions were being created--this district has had internal strife in past few years that seems to have straightened itself out after a school board election but large growth--funding is getting to be issue

Northwest--Trophy Club/Haslet area--rural district getting lots of tract housing growth--some more expensive/better quality than others--lots of positive word of mouth but don't think that is really backed up by stats--will be pressured to deal with new growth vs higher taxes vs stumbling economy--few signs of excellence in the past when you consider that it has a fairly homogeneous student population for past decade or more...check out national merit scholars over past few years...

Arlington -- there are some very nice areas of Arlington and there are some schools that are good but think the problems of the district are just not being addressed--there is also pretty high tax burden in town due to the stadium construction -- this town has HORRIBLE city roads--lots of problems when there is heavy rain--the per capital income and education have been dropping over the past decade or so--not pulling in the type of people who are leaving..

Grand Prairie--the ISD is not all that great and while there is affordable housing there is just not a lot to draw someone there--
Irving--really more negatives than Grand Prairie

FTW--in your price range there might be some good neighborhoods in good school zone but they would be few and older...

areas to west/NW of FTW like Azle, Saginaw might be worth looking at but the ISDs are what I would rank in second tier...

Flower Mound/Lewisville--very good ISD --might be some housing new and in your price range but doubt it--probably older homes
--not that easy to get around Metroplex from Flower Mound especially--

Carrollton/Farmer's Branch--older area--ISD has issues--lots of complaints on this board about neighborhoods in decline in Carrollton--

The ISD has no major issues. Matter of fact it was rated well this past year. Considering that it is an older community the schools are doing quite well overall. If you are referrring to the superintendent issue that occurred in the fall...that has nothing to do with the quality of schools. Matter of fact the schools as a whole are doing very well. Better than most communities in the same area.
