The media has been sloppy about calling anything south of I-30 "Oak Cliff" for as long as I can remember. What many people say on this subject is more a reflection of the media than an accurate representation of where they live. The city of Oak Cliff, which was only a small 2-3 square mile area, was annexed into Dallas over 100 years ago. If someone who lives in those original 2-3 square miles wants to say they live in Oak Cliff, then there is some logic there. If, OTOH, someone who lives 10 miles to the southeast says they live in Oak Cliff, they are free to do so but they would be wrong. If the media wanted to be more responsible, they could refer to the name of a specific neighborhood in SE or SW Dallas when reporting something. That's too hard though.

Yes but those neighborhoods are behind Fair Park - how many of you have ever been back there and know Lagow, Lincoln, Oakland Cemetery, etc?

I remember going to the State Fair when I was about 6 years old with my dad and accidentally driving through that neighborhood. It was messed up for a little kid to see. My dad had one of those Brougham Cadillacs and we went down one of those streets behind Fair Park off of Cullum, and I remember seeing lots of people just milling about in the streets doing I don't know what, and a big woman with the largest boobs I'd ever seen came running over to our car and jumped halfway onto our hood while we were trying to navigate through there and she was giggling and yelling at us, asking if we wanted to buy some crack. It seemed like a dangerous situation at the time, but it was also pretty damn funny when it happened. That was during the Reagan admin., crack was new, social benefits to the poor were cut. Interesting time.

It's misleading for any publication to claim to have identifed the 'most' violent areas in the U.S. Each city has different methods of reporting crime within their city. Dallas until 2007 over-reported crime data to the FBI UCR. Example, if one person vandalized 20 cars in a apartment complex, DPD would report it as 20 individual incidents. The FBI uniform crime reporting methods only require they report it as one criminal incident. Not saying Dallas doesn't have hotspots, but you will see the changes in reporting reflected in the crime rates soon.
