Second the Original Pancake House in Plano.
I know exactly what you're talking about with the manager of the Banana Leaf. It's actually in far north Dallas I think.
The food is better at Jasmine I and Jasmine II in Plano though.

Well, taking my cue from this thread I tried the Old Monk off of Henderson and it was superb.
I had the mussels, stilton burger, along with Chimay and Delirium Belgian beers.. (best I've ever had.) Mandy the waitress is also very good looking...LOL.
Also I went to Mamma's Daughter's Diner in Irving for Southern comfort food and that was excellent as well. They have great vegetable sides. I had the Chicken and Dumplings, okra, and turnip greens.
Two places where you would want to take people from out of town.... just what I was looking for.
Also Ali Baba is great for Middle Eastern Food but I can't say I know another one I can compare it against.

LOVE it!
Also, try Snuffers, the one on lower greenvile - I think they have expanded and are now in Plano and Addison.
Breadwinners is amazing - not a hole though.

Big Shucks on Mockingbird for seafood. The shrimp cocktail is terrific!
Is there a place around here where I can get a good gyro? Also Chicago style Italian roast beef sandwiches?

Campisi's on Mockingbird for Pizza
Kuby's in Snyder Plaza for the German Sausage plate.
I hit Indian Palace off of Preston for Indian food. (not so much a hole in the wall..rather nice inside)
Sonny Bryan's on Inwood for BBQ of course. I thought Peggy Sue's was overrated.
Where would I get the best hamburgers? Fried seafood? Soul food? Are there any other Dallas "institutions" out there that I've missed?
Being from Ft Worth I don't get over too much.

Seconded. Third-ed even.
Yeah, I know, it sounds ridiculous. It'll look even more so when you drive up; a huge honking gas station / beer store on Industrial under I-35, full of pickup trucks, drunks, Dallas Police doing security, and with a teensy weensie taco window on the outside of the store. You'll really wonder "what the hell? They can't mean THIS place?", and be tempted to drive off and look for something else.
Don't do it. We do mean this place. Really. It's amazing. Delicious. Indescribable.
These are one of the closest things you'll find to real, authentic, Mexican tacos anywhere in Dallas (I know; I've eaten street food all over Mexico over the last 15 years). They're small, and the prices just went up (now $1.60 each. and they charge for extra salsa), but man, they're *GOOD*. Meats are delish, tortillas out of this world.
If you live in Dallas, this is one of those "must-try" places.

Fellow Wildcat John Benda has made a mint from that place - enough to retire and let his son run the operation. It was featured on Nightline not too long ago.
