Planting grass in Plano
Hi,
What is the best kind of seed to put down for new grass, and when is the best time to plant it around here?
I have quite a few large, bare spots in my backyard that I need to seed. I don't care if the new grass matches the old grass. I'd prefer a strong grass (as you can tell by my wording, I know nothing about plants and have a brown thumb) that can withstand being trampled by a huge dog and 2 active kids. I planted something last year that grew quickly, but didn't last at all once the summer heat hit it and the dog ran over it a few times.
Thanks for any advice!

Will the grass be under trees or no? And how often are you willing to water it?

Yes, I do have 2 large trees, and we usually set our sprinklers to water 2-3x per week.

What kinda of grass do you have now, Bermuda or St. Augustine. I always buy sod because it is cheap and a quick fix.

I recommend sod as well especially w/ the large dog. The dog can prevent the seed from really growing strong. If you seed you really should keep the area clear of all foot traffic until it is established and this includes the dog.
While you have 2 trees in the backyard........... do they totally block any sun from hitting the ground in the areas you need to put down grass? Do they only block the morning sun, afternoon sun or is it blocked all day? This can make a difference.

I have no idea whether it's Bermuda or St. Augustine. The trees block the sun from hitting the ground only about 2 feet out from the trunk. I might go with the sod, don't know why I didn't think of that to begin with, that would definitely be quicker than waiting for the seed to grow. Where would a good place be to buy the sod?
Thanks again for all your help!

Bermuda is very thin fine blades of grass. St Augustine is wider blades of grass. Both would be a nice yellowish brown color right now.
There are several nurseries around that would have it as well as the average Home Depot and Lowe's.

I'm pretty sure that I have Bermuda grass. I'm going to look into sod. Thanks for all the advice!

If it gets too much shade and not enough sun the Bermuda won't do well.
I'm ready to get rid of Bermuda myself and I'm not even interested in St Augustine either. As soon as our construction project is over with the entire yard will be redone. oh boy......
