Default Sloping backyard

I have seen some properties where the backyard slopes either away from the house, or sometimes, slopes up towards the fence and lower towards the center of the yard.

Looks odd. Isn't that a negative ? Why would someone want a yard like that ?

Slooping away from the house isn't a bad thing. You definately don't want to have to mop up water everytime it rains.

If it slopes downward away from the house that is fine as long as it is not a HUGE drop off and the spot the house was built on was built up too much. If it is an older home that sits on a "high" spot you should already see signs of trouble if the grading, water run off, landscaping has caused a problem and if the owner neglected the foundation. On a new house, hard to say. If you do have a yard that slopes you can build it up and be sure to add french drains. This is not that big of a problem. If a house is on a lot that slopes towards it I can not stress how much to make sure the grading is done properly, water run off appropriate, french drains a must, etc. If you find ponding near the foundation or in any spot in the yard it must be taken care of quickly and correctly.
