Thanks for the details. I started into the process and gave up on it when I started figuring out how much it would cost and how much effort it would take. I guess I should check to see what a ticket would cost for having California registration and drivers license.

Hi,

I recently relocated to Texas and need to obtain a Texas driver's license.

However, the DMV website says that I need to register and insure in Texas all vehicles I own. Does this apply to a vehicle I co-own and keep in another state? I co-own a vehicle with my father (my father is the primary owner) and that vehicle is not coming to the state of Texas anytime soon.....

Is this vehicle I co-own and keep out of state going to prohibit me from getting a Texas driver's license? If so, this will force me to break the law by not getting a Texas license within 30 days of residency.

Does the DMV run some sort of database search? How would they know if I own a car out of state?

Would my co-ownership status wave me from this requirement?

Thanks in advance for any information or advise offered!!!

It works the same way in Montana ... usually takes about 6 weeks to get your regular license in the mail.

I usually register my car in person since I live in Rockwall County and there are never any lines. They no longer require the proof of insurance card, since they know if you are insured or not. So do the cops. I'm sure this is everywhere across the state, but I guess it won't hurt to have it with you just in case.

While it might sound like a pain, to go to a couple different places...I am sure it is nothing compared to the hideous lines in CA, and 1/2 don't speak english, while the fee is minimal for a license, they sure stick it to ya on the registration!!! My car last year was $497- it will be going up in April by 65%...Love the governator!!

Hopefully i will be a Texan by then....hehe

I've been here since October 2008 and didn't do the whole registration/DL thing until last week. No one cared.

I looked at some of the info on the County tax thing, and we have a Motorhome, does anyone know if that would fall under the category of weight?? It would be 2005 or newer, but since it was not acar, i wasn't sure...

Have you gotten a Texas title yet? When they said you can change to texas title later on, how long do you think they meant? I was told I could keep an out-of-state title, but registering my wife's car, with her new last name, they wanted to change her car to a texas title. It is just really confusing. The person I worked with at the tax assessor said one thing, then with my wife, they said something else, but then website says you should change your out-of-state title to texas.

Did they ask you what date you established residency?
