The DART police are always hanging about around Mockingbird Station. The area just to the north of that (behind Kroger) is undergoing a huge redevelopment along with the properties SMU owns on the east side of central which will support the new Bush Library.
If you can get across Mockingbird check out the Pocket Sandwich Theater, the Palomar, Trader Vic's and the jewel of Dallas, Campisi's Egyptian (actually Italian).

Thanks all for the input and the help. I was wondering if anyone has any input on Mockingbird Station Lofts or Phoenix Midtown. Both seem like nice places but Mockingbird lofts has a ridiculously high rate, while Phoenix Midtown is a few hundred dollars cheaper. Also suggestions for other apartments within walking distance of Mockingbird Station would be greatly appreciated.

Phoenix Midtown looks really nice. I like the murals on the sides of the building. You can walk to Kroger, Mockingbird Station, and several restaurants and bars really easily. Might be worth saving a few hundred per month!

As FarNorthDallas said, this type of crime that you are worried about occurs everywhere. I'm not saying that it has a significant crime problem now, but a few years ago two dead bodies were found in the Phoenix Midtown parking garage (not certain whether they were murdered there). I only note this to make the point that crime of any sort can and does occur in all types of neighborhoods, even the posh ones. You can't avoid it. Just be aware of your surroundings and you'll be fine virtually anywhere in Dallas, especially Uptown.

Everyone seems to say that Uptown/M-streets, etc is the place to be for younger folks, but I am somewhat worried about the crime there. Looking at apartment reviews there seems to be a lot of burglaries involving cars. I am used to living in a nice suburb with virtually no worry of crime, so am I being paranoid or should I be concerned with the high rate of crime that seems to plague Uptown, etc. Thank in advance for all the help.

Lincoln Court Apartments has underground gated parking. There are other apts in the area with gated parking, Oak Lawn and UpTown. Something around $1000 should be possible.
