Young professional moving to Dallas
Hey All,
I was hoping to get some suggestions on where to live as a young professional in Dallas. I am 22 and will be moving in this summer to start my new job. I want to limit rent to around $1000/month. Everyone seems to say that Uptown/M-streets, etc is the place to be for younger folks, but I am somewhat worried about the crime there. Looking at apartment reviews there seems to be a lot of burglaries involving cars. I am used to living in a nice suburb with virtually no worry of crime, so am I being paranoid or should I be concerned with the high rate of crime that seems to plague Uptown, etc. Thank in advance for all the help.

While there are quite a few car burglaries, I don't know that I'd be overly concerned about it. Just use common sense and don't leave you car unlocked or have a laptop or GPS device sitting in plain sight while you are away from your car. There are communities around that do have private garages, so that may be an option.

The M Streets are nice, but they're not geared toward a young professional on a budget, but rather an older, established homeowner. If you're wanting to be in the thick, it's Uptown; Oak Lawn north of Lemmon just under Highland Park; Knox-Henderson; Village Apts., north of Lovers Lane.; maybe Lakewood (Oram, Gaston, Live Oak, etc.) if you like serene.

I have looked into that communities with private garages, but it seems so many have problems with broken gates, etc. This seems to lead to people having some crime issues in the garage. I suppose this is really what just adds to my skepticism. Also thinking about getting a newer car, but the theft issue sort of puts me off. Any thoughts on whether nicer cars are more prone to theft?

I was wondering what the thoughts were on the area around Mockingbird Station. The relocation specialist told me of an complex around there (Pheonix Midtown) that is a company preferred property so I can get a slight discount.

I lived in Uptown for 2 years and my BF had a car and parked on the street and the only problem we ever had was with bird poop.

The area around Mockingbird Station is popular too. It's at the northernmost boundary of Lower Greenville.

There is no way to totally avoid crime. Use common sense and move to a decent neighborhood and you will be find. Any major city is going to have some crime so you have to factor that into the equation. Using common sense and being aware of surroundings will serve you well.

The car break in problem is all over the place - city, suburb, small town - all over and everywhere.
