Just a place that's nice with good schools and classy people. Not too caught up on the new money vs. old money debate. I mean, obviously older areas will command higher prices, but I'd like to maximize the amount I can get for a house, while still getting all the things I want. Basically, I don't want to compromise.
I need to take a look at all of these areas again though. I just wanted to know what locals thought of W Plano and whether it fit the bill. BTW, I did see some pretty nice restaurants along I think Park road.....is W Plano known for fine dining? Is Preston Hollow? thanks

It sounds like W Plano may just be your ticket. I love the Lakewood area, but it sounds like you want a newer, bigger home.
On the tollway, it takes 10-12 minutes to get from W Plano to Highland Park/University Park, it's really not that far.

You should be aware that if you live in W. Plano or similar far-flung areas you would have a '972' area code. Not kosher for the night life types.

Hi, I'm doing research on UP/HP and put in the parameters of $1.5 mil. and here's what I found:
University Park: www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/3741-Purdue_University-Park_TX_75225_1103386049 Purdue, University Park, TX, 75225 - MLS ID#11080489 - Single Family Home real estate /// recently updated 4 bed, 5.5 bath, nearly 5,000 sq ft
Highland Park: www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/5501-Key-Street_Highland-Park_TX_75205_1106301063 Key Street, Highland Park, TX, 75205 - MLS ID#11139727 - Single Family Home real estate/// teardown new construction 4 bed 4.5 bath nearly 5,000 sq ft
West Plano: www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/5013-Castle-Creek-Court_Plano_TX_75093_1106946845 Castle Creek Court, Plano, TX, 75093 - MLS ID#11152826 - Single Family Home real estate /// stucco 5 bed 6.5 bath, 6,500 sq ft
Preston Hollow: www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/4334-Northcrest_Dallas_TX_75229_1108073778 Northcrest, Dallas, TX, 75229 - MLS ID#11176399 - /// new construction 6 bed, 5.5 bath 6,500 sq ft
It seems like you get more house for the money in Preston Hollow & W Plano. Is this generally true or are these houses not representative of the housing trends in this communities?

You probably pay the highest price/sq.ft. in Highland Park because you're paying for the "prestige" and the HP school district. Old Preston Hollow could be close though. W. Plano should be significantly lower as far as price/sq.ft.
There is another area that you might like just a little to the west of University Park and south of Preston Hollow. It's called Bluffview bluffview dallas - Google Maps
and it is gorgeous. Lots of big houses on big lots. Most of it is very lush, hilly and it has lots of winding roads. It has tons of character. Also just west of HP/UP is Greenway Parks Welcome to the Frontpage, which is another very upscale older 'hood. It's not as sexy as Bluffview but it is a beautiful area.

they all turned up errors for the links. The two links to the Park Cities are for University Park, which is the "middle class" area compared to Highland Park.

Highland Park and University Park also have their own police and fire departments, tons of parks, shopping and walkable areas and also close to downtown Dallas.

homes in HP are $500 to $900/sf
homes in UP are $200 to 400/sf
homes in W. Plano are $300 to 500/sf
The lots and houses are a lot smaller in UP than HP or W. Plano. It depends what you want. The biggest houses will be in HP or W. Plano. The houses in UP/HP have location, the houses in Plano have larger lots. Both are desirable, but the trade-off is the commute and remoteness of Plano. If it was about 15 miles closer to town, it would be nice. When people want to build a "big-hair" house and can't afford in-town, they choose west plano or any other suburb that has open land.

The Potomac, Druid, Armstrong and Normandy listings are either HP or UP. The others are Preston Hollow area. The Armstrong house was built in 1914 and has been restored and updated. If you click on the address you can see interiors.
