Default Moving to Sherman from Ohio

Hi all,
I am 28 years old (from Youngstown Ohio) and just received a very lucrative job offer in Sherman that I just canot pass up. I was in Sherman for 2 days about a month ago and looked around as much as possible, however I do not know anyone there. I really like the area and I'm not sure what questions I even want to ask at this point, but I was wondering if there is any input you guys can give me about the area, ie: things to do, places to go, anything else. I love the fact that it is so close to Dallas, and the cost of living is very reasonable. I'm very excited about making the move as I will be doing it the week of April 16th. Thank for any input you guys can give me!

Welcome to Texas! My sister lives near the Boardman/Canfield area and she talks about moving back down here.

I don't know much about Sherman but hopefully someone will offer up some information. I do know that it is fairly close to the northern suburbs of the DFW metro, as you said, especially the McKinney/Allen/Fairview area. It's close enough that most of Collin and Denton counties can pick up the local CBS affiliate that serves the Sherman/Ardmore area (channel 10 on a regular TV without cable/satellite affiliation)!

Default Sherman?

A few months ago, I went to work for a bank in Frisco whose corporate office is in Sherman. Most of their locations are either in Sherman or the surrounding areas. Occasionally, I have been required to drive up to Sherman
now. It seems like a very friendly, "folksy" community, and I mean that in a good way! I e-mail and speak to a co-worker in Sherman everyday who has lived her entire life there. I'll see if I can get some input from her about life in Sherman and get back to ya!

Default Sherman-things to do

Ok, I asked my co-worker about things to do in Sherman. She said Sherman had a new Town Center with new restaurants and stores. It has Midway Mall there on Texoma Parkway. Sherman has many churches, social clubs and live theater (she didn't say where). It also has Lake Texoma (for camping, boating and swimming) Tanglewood Resort on the Lake (golf) and Eisenhower State Park (trails, camping, tents, boat ramps), and art galleries just north in Denison. McKinney is pretty close to the south for more selection of restaurants and shopping options. (about 20-25 mins. away.)
About best places to live--this is what she said, "the west side of highway 1417 and southwest is the nicest. Apartments? I would look to the west. There are all sorts of nice apartments from north to south on highway 1417."
Hopes this helps! If she gives me any more tidbits, I'll pass them along as well! She also reiterated that she thinks Sherman is a nice town.

Thank you very much for the input! It's also nice to know that I'll have a very easy drive if I want to visit Dallas! I guess the apartment complex that I'm being set up in is caled the "Villas." Maybe your friend has heard of it. Supposedly it is very nice, but I'm waiting on my brochere to arrive in the mail.

I take my son twice a week to a stuttering specialist over near the hospital in Sherman. I live in Mckinney. The drive from El Dorado in Mckinney is about 35 minutes for us. It is very smooth sailing and hardly any traffic going. I have not seen much of the town but from the highway, there is very pretty rolling hills and the staff where I take my son are very warm and friendly.

We live about 40 miles east of Sherman and we go there often for shopping, eacting out, and doctor's visits. Someone earlier mentioned Tanglewood Resorts. We've stayed there for weekend getaways and we love it. There is a great restaurant on Lake Texoma called The Point. We used to go there for business parties or to celebrate birthdays. I think you'll be happy in Sherman.

Sherman, dream job ? Is it at the TI location up there ?

If it were me, moving from out of state, I'd live more south and commute to Sherman from say Fairview, Melissa or Mckinney. This way if you were to lose your job (god forbid) you'd still be close enough to Plano, Richardson and even Dallas to commute to a new one. In Sherman, a commute to anywhere beyond Mckinney may be too much....

I'm also leary of those northern areas beyond Mckinney because they are just getting too close to OK. OK = Tornado alley and I'm trying to stay clear of twisters.

Personally I'd like to move closer to Dallas (maybe Plano), but my apartment will be paid for me for the first 2 months by my company. Also, I am going to be able to just pay on it month to month with no contract after this. I figure this will also be nice because I can move again in a few months once I can get familiar with the area.
