It really depends on who you are.
I'm kind of a hippy eclectic - so I love Bishop Arts (great pix, Dangerfield!) - Oak Cliff areas. And East Dallas - Lakweood, Little Forest Hills area.

I am so surprised when I read through these posts that no one ever mentions Munger Place. Munger Place is in Old East Dallas, it is a historic district made up of 200 homes. People always mention Lakewood, M streets, Junius Heights, Oak Cliff and sometimes they mention Swiss Ave. I think that Swiss Ave and Munger Place deserve more credit. They are wonderful neighborhoods, they have that very friendly neighborhood feel. I am amazed when people ask where I live and when I mention Munger Place they have no idea where that is, how could we live in a city and not know its history.
Take a look for yourself:

Windy City -- since Junius Heights became a historic district recently (I think it's over 700 homes) and directly adjoins Munger Place and Swiss Avenue Historic Districts - which in turn adjoins Mill Creek and Peak's Suburban HDs on the west and the 7 acres of the Long and Woodrow campus (both historic designated landmarks) which then adjoin the new Santa Fe Trail and Hollywood Heights Conservation District -- maybe there needs to be some over-arching name -- like Old East Dallas? That was used for many years but sort of fell out of favor over time for Lakewood 'area' and just "East Dallas" which most of us think of as the area between the lake and downtown. Far East Dallas would be the east side of the lake -- at least that's what I think most folks who live here think. So I see how people can get confused.
Munger Place was certainly the most dramatic transformation in Dallas history. That is thanks to the old Historic Preservation League and Lakewood Bank in the late 70s and early 80s. I had a chance to talk to the son of the late Lakewood Bank President Don Wright this weekend and I told him we still appreciate what his daddy did...Larry Wright, Pulitzer Prize winner, was here to be inducted into the Woodrow Hall of Fame.

Thanks Lakewooder.
I have heard that the entire area is considered Lakewood but when I mention to people Lakewood they are not really thinking about the entire area. Even is this forum Lakewood is not including Munger Place and Swiss Ave, see previous posts. I believe that Lakewood is a beautiful area, I love it, I mean Tokalon is my favorite street in all of Dallas. But still Munger Place and Swiss don’t get the credit they deserve. As for Junius Heights, yes it’s historic but the homes do not compare to Munger Place.

I think of Lakewood as being between Abrams and the lake, and the area between Abrams and Central being M-Streets. I think of the entire Woodrow zone as "East Dallas."
And I grew up in bland, generic North Dallas, but I would have to say that I would much prefer East Dallas. I think it's the right concentration of community and scenery with amenities and vibrance in the culture of the neighborhood. If I end up in Dallas I'd love to live in Lakewood or M-Streets and see my kids at Stonewall or Lakewood.

M-Streets have developed their own reputation in the last 20-25 years whereas before it was called Greenland Hills which was often called East Dallas or even Lakewood. Vickery Place below there mostly feeds into North Dallas High. Most of NDHS attendance zone is east of Central, which most people do not realize. It includes the Henderson, Fitzhugh, Bennett, Haskell, Peak areas all the way down to Columbia / Zaragoza Elementary area and I-30. Most of Munger Place - east/northeast of Fitzhugh is in the always-exemplary Lipscomb Elementary which feeds into Woodrow.

It depends of course on what you are looking for, but Northwood Hills is one of the most charming communities in Dallas! It is a hidden gem. The winding streets are wide and long, mature trees. The community is just north of 635 and Hillcrest. You are probably looking at $400k and up... stay west of Meandering. Depending on your price range there are even new homes to be had!
