Personally, I'm not a big fan of The Salt Lick. There are some great places to eat BBQ in Austin (lived there for 2 years). Rudy's is the hands down winner as far as I've tasted in the DFW area. They have yummy brisket, turkey, creamed corn, beans, etc. If you tell them it is your first visit, they will let you try anything off the menu. I like the one in Denton (not sure if there are other locations). Riscky's (SP) was decent. Spring Creek was decent. I like Dickey's, but that's probably because I'm a fan of free ice cream and cheesy potatoes.

Salt Lick is more about the taking a cooler and boozing and stuffing yourself with your good friends aspect than it is about eating excellent BBQ. It's very good, but not as good as some of the offerings east of Austin. Also, IIRC their sauce is really salty.

I will say that the Salt Lick has the best potato salad I've ever had by a mile.

Salt Lick sauce is drinkable. Really.

Dickey's brisket is edible, but if Rudy's is nearby, you'd be crazy to hit Dickey's.

First of all, BBQ from a franchise should be anti-American. It is almost like stopping for BBQ up in Minnesota. They don't have a clue!

I have to hand it to the Hill Country BBQ Road Houses. Nothing in the Dallas area even comes close. We've actually made special trips to places like Lampasas to stock up.

But, I like Babes. There's another BBQ place in Collinsville on 377 that's worth the trip. Now this is weird, Costco has BBQ Pork Ribs that are very meaty and finger lick'n good!

I remember about 30 years ago, right on the corner of Preston and Park in Plano, long before all the development, there was this older gent living in an old rustic house, right where the LaMadeline is now, who had the best smoked pork ribs in the universe!

A subject near and dear to my heart. Allow me to save this thread!

No, we don't have Luling, Lockhart, Llano, Taylor or Elgin 'cue here. But damn folks, those places are the epicenter of the BBQ universe. And, IMO, Salt Lick isn't worth a hoot. You go for the experience, bring in a cooler of beer and enjoy. I will admit to liking their sauce however.

But back to the topic at hand: Metroplex BBQ.

Right now I see 3 glaring omissions:

1. David's BBQ in Pantego (little hamlet near central Arlington) on Park Row. Kin to Red Bryan and will sellout of the good stuff routinely. The best in the metroplex without equal.

2. North Main BBQ in Euless. This place is hard to miss with the GIANT ARMADILLO out front.

3. Angelo's on White Settlement Rd in Ft Worth. It beats Railhead 8 times out of 10 and the schooners are just as cold.

Raymond's on Garland Road is pretty good and has been there for 40 or 50 years. Even some newcomers have given it good reviews on the web.

I usually go to Sammy's next to the Federal Reserve when I want BBQ and want to sit outside...

Porkie's on E. NW Highway used to be good but I quit going when they stopped the 99 cent sandwiches at their old drive-through. They had a simple menu then and it worked well - they moved across the street, upped the prices and expanded the menu - not so good.

I've been going to Raymonds since it was "Underwoods", and that was 35-40 years ago. Their meats probably aren't the best, but you can't beat their veggies, esp. the beans. Best I've ever had at a BBQ restaurant. Raymond retired and sold out to some Chinese people about 3 or 4 years ago, but to their credit the menu is the same.

Wish I could say the same for the Casa Linda bakery across the street. They had a rep as one of the best bakeries in Dallas, but our son recently got married and used them for their wedding cake. BIG mistake; the cake was overcooked and dry as a bone. Called the owner to complain and all he did was chew us out for complaining and disputed everything we brought up. BTW - a Chinese family also recently bought them out as well.

2 hours outside of Austin in a little town called Lexington is a wooden shack that only opens for 4 hours on Saturday (or until the meat runs out). The pit master is a 74 year old woman named Tootsie. Memphis, Kansas City, Dallas, Austin, San Jose, Oakland, Tootsie out does 'em all.

Last month when we were there we got the last pound and half of brisket and a couple of pounds of sausage at 11:00 am. The people remaining in line behind us all have this look that makes you feel guilty for not buying less. The 2 hour ride back to Austin was an experience I will never forget. The meat coming out of those pits is legendary stuff... Brisket that was crunchy on the outside and soft as butter on the inside with a perfect smoke ring under the bark. The last two of those sausages still had all of the original smoke flavor the next morning for breakfast.
