when you cook for so few it is not really comparable to a commercial place--that is more like cooking for your friends...
food as good as you describe is available all day long at City Market in Luling--
more is better -- if it is good to start with...

Luling is 3.5-4 hours from Dallas. If you wanted to make sure you get meat, you'd need to leave early. Most of the barbecue belt establishements tend to open around 6 AM and sell their meat until they run out, at which point they close.

And you'd have to drive through Lockhart. Don't bother driving on to Luling, just take advantage of the Barbecue Capital of the World!

I think the only bbq in dallas remotely close to the holy trinity (coopers in llano, louie muellers in taylor, and kruez in lockhart) is RUDYS. Even though it is a chain, it is a hill country chain...and pretty good.

Coopers is not even near what it was 10 years ago. Kreuz' & Smitty's are both great. Bobby Mueller died recently, but hopefully his sons can keep up the place.

Go to Smitty's on the weekend for the prime rib. It's unreal.

Not to get into a debate about regional differences in BBQ, but being from Georgia, I prefer pork when I eat BBQ. Where in the metroplex can I get good pulled pork BBQ? It's all brisket and sausage here in TX.

And does anyone in Texas know what Brunswick Stew is? A staple at any decent BBQ joint in GA and the Carolinas, would have to be a transplant that specializes in food from back home. Any ideas anyone? I've asked around work and have yet to find a Texan who even knows what Brunswick stew is. I would drive a good hour for some good Brunswick Stew.
