I've heard for many years that Dallas municipality and Dallas county were actually named after two different individuals.

The small Dallas village was named after a personal friend of John Neely Bryan, the founder, but Dallas county was named after the US vice president George Mifflin Dallas, a Democrat who contributed to Texas joining the USA.

Does anyone have more info/insight on this bit of history?

Dallas County was named after the town of Dallas.

It's unknown who the city was named after, but the two leading theories are a friend of JN Bryan, or vice president George Dallas.

At least that's what I can remember from 7th grade Texas History.

The problem with that theory is that in 1839, when the village of Dallas was founded, George M Dallas was serving as the ambassador to Russia. He didn't become a vice president until 1845.

I'd think it unlikely that the village of Dallas would have been named for the ambassador to Russia. Or that Bryan, the founder, would have had a deep friendship with him.

Maybe people who knew both of them thought Dallas deserved the honor more than Bryan.

Why should anyone name a small Texas village after the ambassador to Russia?

And who was it that knew both the ambassador and Bryan? After all, he was just an obscure real estate promoter in a backwater territory.

Also, how many people today would name a real estate development after the current ambassador to Russia? In fact, how many people know who he is?

But what about the hypothetical friend? The local who wasn't the ambassador to Russia?

Default How Dallas got it's name.

In 1832....the Dalai Lama of the day, Tsultrim Gyatso, visited. He was honored in a "Lasso" ceremony the cowboy way. Hence derived the name.....
Dal Las

So Dallas has always suffered from an identity crisis.

"In 1849 Dallas County was created and named after George Mifflin Dallas, supporter of the annexation of Texas and vice president of the United States under James Knox Polk. The city of Dallas is thought to be named after either the vice president or his brother, Alexander James Dallas, a commander of the U.S. Navy's Gulf of Mexico squadron."
