Even if make-up could help Houston's appearance, the humidity would melt it away in an instant. Sorry, but I just don't visualize a great beauty like Beyonce when I think of Houston. And, I am the first to admit that I have initiated a shallow and silly exercise by attempting to capture a few qualities of a city by posting a picture of the celebrity who most reminds me of that city. But it's fun.

Certainly don't worry about the evangelicals - they aren't on every street corner! I have lived here for 17 years (moved from PA), and though I was surprised at first that people talked openly about their church, god, prayer, etc., I have found that they are just talking about a part of their life that is important to them and they don't necessarily want to convert you or "save you". If they ARE interested in "saving" you, and you politely tell them that you're not interested, they are usually very respectful and either change the subject or move on to someone else. No problem.

I have to chime in here that while many people don't bat an eyelash in regards to interracial dating it does garner more attention in Dallas than in any other major city. I think it has to do with Dallas attracting a lot of folk from the surrounding rural countryside. We had a debate in a small group one night in regards to interracial dating and I was surprised that about 20% of the group were against it. This is from a group that considered itself fairly progressive mind you and not your typical evangelical fire and brimstone types. I might add that the group leader was African American.

I was also surprised that roughly half of the group felt that woman should not hold leadership positions and that the man should be the head of the household. Of all the people that held this belief most were Dallas natives or from the surrounding rural areas.

So while some Dallasites do not hold these conservative beliefs there are enough that do to lend credence to the fact that racism and conservatism ingrained in Dallas. I think that most of the posters here who claim to have never encountered these types in Dallas don't interact with a lot of different types of people and only associate with folks of the same persuasion.

Well the OP may not have started this thread for the purpose of comparing cities, but if you re-read item #24 from this post you will see that the OP subsequently asked how the people in Dallas, Houston & Austin differ. He or she then offered some general impressions of each of those cities. BTW, who made you the moderator? It is usually the case that these threads go beyond just answering the initial question posed by an OP. They often turn into conversations. If you don't like the direction of the conversation, then you don't have to participate.

jeez my ADD must have gotten in the way and I'm deeply sorry for my offensive strategy of inconsistently derailing the topic, LOL.

Thank you for understanding DN. Not to mention I think intercity rivalry is interesting. It shows the character and true colors of the people and the places. Thus going back to my original post "people in Dallas". Oh and I loved the music celeberties as ambassadors to Dallas, Austin, & Houston as they pretty much painted the picture of the steryotypes. Thanks for keeping it real Dallas Native.

Yours truely, "OP"

Well, you're welcome. I'm glad you liked my celebrity picture strategy. Now I'm thinking of taking it national. Just consider the possibilities. I see Paris Hilton representing LA. For Las Vegas, I'm leaning towards Liberace (dead celebs are OK). NYC probably requires multiple celebrity ambassadors........Howard Stern, Woody Allen, Joan Rivers & Fran Drescher all come to mind. Any ideas about who best captures the stereotypes of Boston? So far, all I've come up with is Ted Kennedy and Lilith Crane from Cheers (as played by Bebe Neuwirth).

I figured as such when you posted that pic, but I like looking at Beyonce, so I posted her pic up.

But I *totally* understand what you're saying though. Houston has great museums, shopping, and excellent restaurants, however, Houston does not put on a pretty face. It's definitely a city you have to really get to know in order to appreciate it. A drive down 45 from Conroe to Downtown is just one of the many "sides" of Houston.

What celeb do you have in mind for Atlanta? Atlanta is good at hiding it's 'ugliness' with the tall trees and terrain.

Hmmm. Good one. I've only been to Atlanta a few times, but I've always enjoyed it there. What I saw of it was actually very pretty. OK, for dead celebs, I think Martin Luther King or Coretta Scott King would be fitting. For living celebs, it's a toss up between Julia Sugarbaker (Dixie Carter) and Suzanne Sugarbaker (Delta Burke) from Designing Women. Your thoughts?

Ye gads, first you want to drag all the Obama voters out of Dallas county, and now you want to tell Altanteans their town is ugly.

You're not running a popularity contest, are you?
