only 9 months a texan, lease is up in july, looking for a city comparable to rockwall but more..economically priced!
HI!
I have run into a little dilema and am looking fo help! Seems there is a LOT of good advice on here.
We are currently leasing a home in Rockwall, and LOVE it, but our lease is due to end in July and like a lot of people, we have (and continuously are) undergoing the tightening of our financial belt. Unfortunately, we didn't forsee having to cut our cost of living almost in half when he moved for a job, but, the business closed and now we are forced to find a community that isn't so costly.
here is the issue:
I work full time in Rockwall and still attend school full time in Commerce (TAMU-Commerce), he now works in Dallas at 635 & 75. We need to find a happy medium, but I am really hoping for a community that boasts the same strong points as Rockwall. We are young (mid 20s, early 30s) no children and love having things to do in the evening, love to get on the lake on the weekends, I love the Farmers Market on Saturdays and the community events. Only being here for less than a year, I don't what cities to even look in. All I hear over and over is "NOT OAK CLIFF" and I don't really even know why! I don't know the difference between North and East Dallas, North Garland and just Garland, etc.
A point in the right direction would be very appreciated!
Thanks,
Erica

Rowlett or NE Richardson (near access to George Bush Turnpike) sound like they'd be solid options.
I feel compelled to comment on Oak Cliff. Oak Cliff is such a huge area that ignorant people tend to categorize the entire community as one bad place, which is simply not true. North Oak Cliff has some of the most beautiful homes, hills, parks, etc in the entire metroplex. However, in your case, I wouldn't recommend the commute.

What about renting an apartment instead of a house? They usually cost less.
Rowlett is about the same as Rockwall.
Mesquite will be more affordable and will cut down on hubby's commute. You'll have further to drive. It's also not as nice as Rockwall.

Do you have a price range your looking at. I would suggest Mesquite or Forney as more affordable options. For Mesquite take a look at the Creek Crossing/ Falcons Liar area. There also are some nice homes near the intersection of Beltline and Barnes Bridge. The vast majority of these homes will be in the 120k-200k range. The city of Fate should also be considered. It is the next town down from Rockwall and may be your best option. Goodluck on your search.

You have tons of options, if you would just let us know your budget we could help a little better; if you want to buy or rent, etc.. Most options have been given to you here. But there are affordable areas even in Rockwall, if you just seek them out. My stepdaughter has been leasing a house there for two years at $825 per month, a small 3-2-1 built in the '70s.

Move on over to Rowlett. My hubby works in West Dallas off 35E South, I now work in Dallas on the edge of Mesquite off 30 and it takes me less then 20 mins in the am and 15 mins in the pm to get home. Hubby works early am he leaves at 5am takes him 20 mins to get to work, off at 2-3pm takes about 30-40 mins to get home. Not bad commutes at all.
You could even consider North East Garland off Firewheel/Rowlett Rd.
Rowlett is a great area, we have the lake too. And Rockwall is not far away so you can still have all your Rockwall amenities. I go to the Rockwall Farmers Market. Rowlett has a small farmers market on the weekends on Main St. (old town)
I know I am bias, but I perfer Rowlett over Rockwall. I live off of Rowlett/Firewheel area.
