eastdallasson is a good example of why you don't need private schools in Lakewood.
See you on the 4th at the parade, pepper - I'm usually helping with the setup and takedown at Tokalon Park at the end of the parade. That is where you will find all the very close graduates of public school in Lakewood - at the kegs! We have a blast.

IMO: Just because some other area is more expensive doesn't mean it's better.
I personally think Lakewood has more natural beauty than other areas of DFW. Give me the right piece of property on the lake, you can build the rest of the grounds/house.
Out of my curiosity, what area do you feel is better and why?

PS: At risk of getting lynched... if money were no object, I would probably not live in Texas. I'd probably live in France or Italy somewhere.

Ditto.
If I HAD to live in Dallas and money were no object, I still say Lakewood b/c it fits my personality and preferences. Then, with another chunk of my endless cash, I would buy an island in the carribean and spend my free time there.

Did you all find out I won the lottery
I'd knock on the door of the house on the LARGE parcel of land up the road from me and make them an offer they could not refuse. Build my own house on that land and put in a large private lake for my water toys (SeaDoo's mostly). Plenty of areas w/ trees for the "shady" times and plenty of open area for the cattle/longhorns to roam and a lake to play on for fun with no crowds. Not left much in the same school district around the lake to build the house I want with direct water access so that is why I'd get this piece of land. I'd stay in the same school district since my child is in the IB program and it doesn't cost anything as far as tuition and just as good as a private school. If I could not get that piece of land I'd head up to Parker for something as there are some GREAT pieces of property up there as well. Next would be Lakewood, yes it IS a nice area that has plenty of $$$$$. Overlooking White Rock would be awesome. Hmm, maybe I'd go buy Bella Nora It is still for sale?
Once my kids are out of school in 8 years I'd do what I plan on doing anyway. Buy something in Cabo and Tahoe and keep my place here. Gotta keep the BIG garage full of the cars somewhere . I'd also keep my primary residence in a low tax state so that would be Texas or Nevada. The place in Tahoe would have to be on the lake or ski-in/ski-out. Probably go for the skiing instead of lakefront since my place in Cabo would be beachfront .
Then I'd travel anywhere I wanted but stay in Cabo during the winter months, Tahoe in July/August and a few weeks for skiing in the winter. Dallas to see the family and take care of the cars and drive them some.
Got it all planned out

The good news is that you can also live in Lakewood next to the mansions/estates without paying for a mansion. Of course it is not cheap but it's possible to find something decent for $300K more or less (average is about $550K). When I was growing up I did not live in one of 'the big houses' yet I went to school with those kids and I would regularly see the richest man in the world, H. L. Hunt, and the man with the best taste in the world, Stanley Marcus. I still have a home just around the corner from the Marcus Estate and it's a two-bedroom Tudor.

If money were no object I would stay right where I am. I might upgrade my 11 year old mini-van however :-)

Well I guess the secret phrase here is Price is no object, of course if one could build right on the lake it would be awesome. I could say the same about places like Highland Shores for one or any lake location. I was thinking more in terms of an entire area. Depending on where I worked I would still prefer living in places like Double Oak, Southlake, etc. I happen to be partial to the west and no west, that's all. We all have our favorite locations. Now, if I could really live anywhere in the metroplex I think it would be Highland Park or that general area. Again, it takes money. You are right, expensive does not make it better, but it does usually mean better schools and better facilities.
I am not sure there is a right or wrong answer to this, to me, when I think of places to live in the area if I had all the money in the world, White Rock would not come to mind. of course I don't have to worry cause I will never have that kind of money so will have to be happy with my middle class neighborhood.

oh please do, I didn't mean to single it out. Actually I think I do know where you are coming from. For whatever reason areas that are east of many cities do not get the attention those in the west get, same with those south. We even have it here. We live west of the main highway (no it isn't really a main highway as in metro city highways) and we are supposidly the elite: This isn't true, but it is how people precieive the area. We lived on the east side of Los Angeles for many years. All the attention was given to the San Fernando Valley and areas west of Los Angeles. The media forgot our region existed even though we had some awesome areas. We used to get very defensive, or maybe just pissed off would be a better way to put it. Same when we lived in Northern VA, The north side of DC, namely areas like Betheda MD were the "in" places to live, our area was acceptable but not exclusive to those in the know or so they thought.
I guess I am guilty of thinking the same way. shame on me, will I change, probably not..Shame on me again.
