I have a lot of fans at that corner when I drive my '66 Mustang.
However, after I won a blue ribbon I decided to 'go out on top' and haven't driven in the parade - except that I caught a ride a couple of years ago in the middle of the parade (it's a long way to the kegs in the park) with one of my classmates who also has a '66 Mustang. The Lakewood parade is sort of like that - you see one of your friends and you just jump in the car or on their float!

Now the Thompsons are the only ones on that corner I know - the other three used to be the Nalleys, Barons and Everts (as in jewelers -- there is a third floor 'ballroom' up there). Mr. Pearson owned all that land at the turn of the last century.
Sorry for the aside but maybe it will give you an idea of the kind of place Lakewood is..

Depending on where I worked I would still prefer living in places like Double Oak, Southlake, etc. I happen to be partial to the west and no west, that's all. We all have our favorite locations. Now, if I could really live anywhere in the metroplex I think it would be Highland Park or that general area. Again, it takes money. You are right, expensive does not make it better, but it does usually mean better schools and better facilities.
I am not sure there is a right or wrong answer to this, to me, when I think of places to live in the area if I had all the money in the world, White Rock would not come to mind. of course I don't have to worry cause I will never have that kind of money so will have to be happy with my middle class neighborhood.

Personal preference is a funny thing, isn't it?
Personally, if money were no object, HP wouldn't even make my short list. It has lots of beautiful homes and some awesome old growth trees, but not much more in the way of natural beauty. I think that's why I lean toward White Rock Lake. Natural beauty AND it's close to downtown/uptown. As far as Southlake and some of the other places others have mentioned... personally, the last thing I'd do is move away from the arts district, Uptown, Knox/Hendersen, etc. I would be frequenting those places so much I'd hate to be spending that much time traveling to/from my house.
I tell you one thing... I'd have to have a personal trainer and spend a lot of time on my bike to maintain my weight since I'd be on a mission to eat at every restaurant in Dallas. Hehe!

Dream place to raise kids
Little Elm/ Oak Point has the best of both worlds... our kids love it!!! We came from Plano/ Frisco area, and we wanted a small town feel but still be closer to the rest of the world. We love it out here. We live in a gated community off the lake (lewisville) and we are just 15-20 minutes from stonebrier and airport.... the kids go fishing, and we enjoy the simple life of the small town... away from the rat race.
We got our home/ lot from Braewood Developments- and they have some amazing developments out in Little Elm Oak Point area... I think his website is www.mylakelot.com- you should check it out. You have to see it to believe it.
It's the best kept secret- since we moved here 2 years ago, our family has grown closer. We love it. Our home is on the lake (5000 sq feet) but there are bigger and smaller houses availible.
The Lake Lewisville tollbridge is opening up in August connecting us to 35.

I'd stay exactly where I am, in our house in Lakewood. My kids can run out the door to play with any of the 16 other kids on our street, can't beat that!

If money were no object, I would be headed to Highland Park. There is a new house for sale on Beverly(3500 Beverly Dr.) that I have had my eye on for sometime now. It would be the best of both worlds-very close to downtown Dallas for work and entertainment, located in a safe area, ad I would be surrounded by all of my friends as I know a ton of people in the Park Cities. That is only if I had to say in the Dallas area though.
