Best hospital to have a baby?
Medically speaking, not decor...
We live in Sachse and are contemplating having another little one. We just moved to the area, so I need to find an OB/GYN and would like to pick one based on the hospital they work with.
Which hospital has the best reputation for infant care? Who has a NICU? Is there a hospital that has a really bad rep?
Thanks,
Cristie

I had both of mine at Medical City Dallas which also has a Childrens Hospital. My sis recently had her baby at Presby Allen, it is a VERY small hospital and does not have NICU. LakePointe Medical is in Rowlett but also does not have a NICU (more babies born here though than at Presby Allen). My doctor now is at Lakepointe and I TOTALLY LOVE HIM! Dr. Sudela. Medical City would be your next best closest hopsital and does not take long to get to from out here (30 minutes EASY driving the speed limit). Presby Dallas is next which is a bit farther down 75 at Walnut Hill between Greenville Ave and 75-Central. Both of these hospitals have TONS of doctors, ob's and peditricians that use them and located there at the hospital.

Congrats to you and your sister. Can you let me know what she thought of Allen Presby?
Thanks

Thanks. It was okay and that is about her description of it too. She liked it though. It is a very small hospital and at the time there were only 3 other babies there at any one time max. We witnessed one nurse turning all visitors (family and all) away from one room telling them she did not want them there, the nurse not the new mother. Maybe she was just having a bad day or maybe the new mother really did not want visitors and the nurse was taking the fall for it The nurses told my sis and us that they hardly EVER have any babies born over the weekends or during the evening as most are scheduled c-sections or induced. I know my sisters doctor will only do c-sections as he does not want to be at the hopsital during off hours. Trust me, you do NOT want a c if you can avoid one. The recovery time alone is a killer for a new mom vs a vaginal delivery and you can not eat anything after a c until the next day. Whereas a regular delivery you can eat pretty much right away. She liked the meals though and that you could order your meal at any time during the day. Overall from my vantage point I was not overy thrilled w/ the hospital. The visitors restroom was not cleaned for 2 days. The hospital is one one side and doctors offices on another but they share a common set of elevators in the middle and the public restrooms. On the same floor as the maternity & nursery were the ob and peditricians offices. This uncleaned bathroom was there and only got cleaned and the toilet unstopped (something we all found on day 1) until we complained on the morning of day 3. Presby's are good hospitals and I've always liked Presby Dallas.
Two others you might check on are Plano Medical Center or Medical Center of Plano (Coit & 15th St) and Baylor Plano (located right on Hwy 190). I know the first one has a MUCH larger maternity section that Presby Allen does.

I delivered my last at Baylor downtown and it was great. My ob/gyn is Dr. James T Norwood. He was actually on Maternity Ward and shown delivering multiples. He is also listed in D magazine as one of the best ob/gyn doctors in the metroplex. He is very soft spoken, very kind and has a way of putting me at ease. Also he accepts almost all insurance. I know this because at the time of being pregnant with my son, my husbands company made us switch insurance companies, and one where they were just terrible. There was just a few handful that would accept our insurance and his office is one of the few that did. I was lucky to have him and continue to feel lucky that he takes care of me.
Here is a link to his office

Baylor downtown has a wonderful nicu unit too and is considered to be one of the best facilities in the United States.
Also Preby Dallas is wonderful too and say this because of my sister in law who had both her children there. She was high risk and her ob, Dr. Rey ( i think that is how she spells her last name) took very good care of my sister in law while she carried not only her babies but endured hypertension and a cyst that grew to be the size of a lemon. So I can recommend that facility.
Medical City too is great like Mom said. I have been there when my dad had a procedure done on his heart many years ago. Great facilities and Medical City has a good reputation.
I have heard good things about Plano Presby too but that is in West Plano and think your best bet is to stay more in Dallas.
Hope that all helps you.

Presbyterian Dallas is an awesome facility I had my daughter there and the nursing staff was amazing...I went up there 4 years after having my daughter to visit a friend who just had her baby and they actually remembered me and were surprised to see how big my daughter was. They truly care about the patients.
I can agree with the others I have heard wonderful things about Baylor Dallas and Medical City hospital as well

I am pregnant with my first child and it is very important to me to deliver in a great place. I myself, along with most of my family where born in Baylor Dallas, but I am not sold on Baylor. Don't get me wrong they have some of the best doctors hands down, but the facility is old and very hard to get around. All of these posts have really helped me narrow it down, but I wanted to through a few things out there and see if you all could help me a little more. I am wanting all the great staff/doctors like Baylor but a newer, more comfortable facility that is much easier to get around for visitors. I would like my labor and delivery room to be colorful, inviting and warm. Up to date, less flowers and old... does that sound terrible? Can anyone give me a little more info on Presby Dallas or Medical City?

All of our children were born at the main Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas (Walnut Hill Lane between Central Expwy. & Greenville Ave.) and we liked everything about it. Every adult on my side of the family was born at Baylor Hospital - from late 1920's to mid 1930's to early 1960's - and we turned out okay!

A friend of mine had her son at Baylor Garland and was not happy with how they handled things. I miscarried and their dumb ER docs gave the wrong diagnoses. Luckily I had already made an appointment at Medical City and got the proper care. I would have to give a thumbs down to Baylor Garland for their OB/GYN services.
There's a great practice at Medical City, Dr. Milstein is the head doctor, but there are several others.
