For urban & modern living, I recommend you check into the Uptown/ Turtle Creek/ Knox-Henderson neighborhoods of Dallas. They are adjacent to Highland Park- which you responded to- but less expensive & with a greater offering of multi-family rentals, be it townhomes, condos, apartments (both big & small complexes, and also high rises), and duplexes. Zip codes 75204, 75219, and the non-HP part of 75205.
These areas put you in walking distance or a short 5-10 minute drive from the Arts District downtown (musems, symphony, & opera), hundreds of independent, non-chain restaurants & stores, the American Airlines Center (pro hockey & basketball, as well as dozens of concerts & events each year). You will also be close to Turtle Creek & it's parks, as well as the Katy Trail (biking, walking, running).
About 10-15 minutes away are White Rock Lake (biking, jogging trail, picknicking, sailing, & The Arboretum). 10 minutes north is NorthPark mall. 10-15 minutes south takes you to the Dallas Zoo & the Bishops Arts District, a funky little neighborhood with great shops, eats, & people watching.
As far as golf, many of the good courses are private, but I can name 2 good public courses a 10-12 minute drive from the area I am suggesting- Tennison in East Dallas & Stevens Park in North Oak Cliff.
If you enjoy the above activities I mentioned & see yourselves doing these things 2-3+ times a week, I strongly advise against Frisco, McKinney, Prosper, Coppell, etc. You will need to add 30-60 minutes to the drive times I mentioned. Those at heavily family-focused areas, whereas Uptown/ Knox-Henderson/ Turtle Creek is a great mix of people young & older. Many empty nesters are moving to these areas to be close to the cultural heart of the city. A condo or townhouse can provide the space you need, with low maintenance.
