Unfortunately, there is double standard and those same courtesies were not always extended to African Americans among others

I disagree. While Dallas, historically atleast, may have embraced racist ideals and promoted institutionalized racism against blacks and other minorities, the city is far too corporate-minded and profit-seeking to care what color skin someone has.
The only color that really matters in Dallas is green. There's racism everywhere, Dallas included, but this seems to be the exception rather than the rule from my experience.

There's your problem. Dallasites instinctively distrust folks who have passports. ;-)
> Hold a door for a lady (or man) in any other city and you will get a thank you or at least a nod

I habitually hold doors open when there is someone behind me. I do not expect thanks but I would say that only 50% appear to be cognizant that someone has held the door for them. The others appear to believe the door is magically open or that there is no door.

One might argue that well-traveled folks with real class would never describe themselves as "well-traveled with real class", considering that behaviour to be vulgar.
I have a personal belief that people that use the word "classy" fundamentally misunderstand the nature of class and status. Re-reading Fussell may be an effective remedy.

Oh really?
How many Caucasian Anglo Californians would hold the door open for a Mexican field hand? I suspect that the custom would not always be extended to Cali Hispanics, especially in grape picking season.
Institutional and legal racism is alive and well in Southern California.

And here I thought that the fine people of California were supposed to be all open minded to everyone no matter what color their skin was, their religious beliefs, political affiliation, etc.

Fortunately for the "classy" Anglo Californians, they rarely have to come across this scenario because they won't even go to the same establishments as the "workers". The class lines, residential, commercial, and recreational, are heavily drawn and very distinct.

But look at who they elected governor. It really says a lot about them as open-minded people that they could see past his accent. It really says a lot.

I think there was more to that election than accent? Have you heard the word, money or maybe name recognition or maybe just plain "we want a change" and do you think he would be elected again?
