Why are people in Dallas so rude and pretentious?
I have traveled all over the world and been to almost every major city in the U.S. and I can honestly say when it comes to rude people Dallas takes home the trophy. Hold a door for a lady (or man) in any other city and you will get a thank you or at least a nod, hold a door for a Dallas lady and she will stick her nose in the air and walk on by. And thats just one example.
I have tried to wrap my mind around it to understand why people in Dallas are so rude but I simply cant. Yes Dallas you are a large city in the heart of a large state but seriously, its Texas. Its not a pretty city either, I dont care how many green neon lights you stick on a building, its just ugly. So you have a Gucci at North Park mall... sorry but that doesn't make you world class.
I saw a shirt in a store while visiting the last time that said "keep Dallas pretentious", I can tell you, you have a long way to go before you lose the pretentiousness but just realize that when well traveled and people with real class visit your city and experience the pretentiousness, we laugh. Being pretentious and rude does not make you special, or classy, or in any way a world class city, it just makes you appear to be an ignorant a-hole in the middle of Texas.

Man, sorry you had a bad experience, but assuming everyone in Dallas is as you described, makes you seem ignorant. As someone who has also traveled (and lived) all over the world, I can assure you that pretentious and rude people can live anywhere.

Amen to that. A vast majority of my experiences in Dallas have been pleasant and unpretentious. Do I encounter rude people? Sure - especially on the tollway during rush hour.
If you want pretentious try Boulder, Colorado.

Ah, kind of true about Boulder. It's a cool little town, but I noticed last summer that people were not friendly there. Not outwardly rude, but my sister and I were saying, for instance, that waitresses and weren't friendly.

I've been to Boulder, and I didn't feel the people I met were traditionally pretentious, I though it was more of Eco-Superiority. To each his own.
I always love it when people talk about how they have "real-class" as they proceed to prove that they don't. I also think it's funny when people group everyone together and make inane assumptions.
Also, a t-shirt that says..."keep Dallas pretentious"....really? The only place I can think of where they could even get away with selling that would be Cedar Springs. I think it was meant to be funny.

Ain't that the truth. After being gone for a week to the west coast....... HA! Dallas ain't even close to being "rude" or pretentious. LOL!!!
I'm going to take a guess that the attitude coming forth from the victim here probably gave them the vibe that the people they were around were "rude".
It would be a safe bet to make that the shirt was meant to be a total joke.
Oh, and considering the op joined in 2007 and has only made 3 posts...........

Welcome home, mom, I was wondering where you were...yah I can't tell you how many times I have uttered the 'b' word under my breath while holding doors open for ladies in CA and other places.

Thanks.
LOL!!! Where I was it wasn't always a sure bet that the ladies you were holding the doors open for were really ladies or............. Well, some were "working ladies" I'm sure It was rough on the guys hanging out where some of the Playboy bunnies were living while working in a show. HEHEHE!!!
FYI, Holly is actually very nice and a normal average looking pretty young lady that walks her dog several times a day and has older ladies on the elevators confused that "there are rooms that allow dogs......". And she is not busty at all. It is all padding

Keep Dallas Pretentious? I'm certain that's a joke, maybe it's not funny to non-Texans, but it's still a joke. It adds to the whole "Keep Austin Weird" concept by playing on inaccurate stereotypes. It's just like Houston's "Keep Houston Ugly."
Keep Houston Ugly Bumper sticker from Zazzle.com
By the way, isn't expecting someone to thank you for such a miniscule favor as opening a door rude in and of itself? Just asking. If it ain't charity, then why should anyone be grateful? Perhaps, as a prodigious traveler, you'd know to accept and replicate the mores of the culture you're visiting rather than seek to enforce your own social norms from your own hometown on them.
