We never said Dallas was miserable. Austin yes is miserable.
When I visited Dallas in the past I always loved it. The people are great most of the time. The events and festivities are always amazing. Aceplace loves it too.

Austin is collegy and small town but it is not hippy, artsy, tree hugging or a gay paradise like it once used to be marketed as. If that was ever a reality there.

Austin if you want more collegy, hippy, liberal, artsy, tree hugging small town. AUS also has the advantage of just a nicer natural setting - more leafy, greener with hills and streams.
Thanks!
You're welcome.

I think the OP would be happier in Dallas. Although Austin is not really a small city anymore, as its suburbs like Round Rock are a lot like the northern suburbs of Dallas.
Pros of Dallas: Better job market, more to do (because it's much larger) in terms of shopping and clubbing, much better sports city, has some similar areas to Austin, better public transportation
Pros of Austin: Much more natural beauty, population is more educated, much lower crime, more bike friendly, more liberal population, less materialism.
Artsyguy and Aceplace are notorious on these boards for never missing a chance to bash Austin.
What's bad about materialism Aceplace? Well, anyone can be materialistic. Watch any thug on the streets and chances are he values material things over intellectual pleasures. It's a cheap and a morally inferior way to live. There is nothing inherently wrong with wanting to increase one's wealth, what is wrong is when you equate valuing material things with sound moral judgment which you seem to believe. When you are rich and stupid, you are materialistic (see all the rich athletes and entertainers), when you are rich and smart, you're probably more modest in your spending habits and more likely to give to charities and nonprofits.

Very true. Austin is not a small city at all with over a million people living in the area, however, it still has small city amenities and small city mentalities. No offense

Materialism, in this context, is not negative just because it's about coveting objects, it's about coveting objects that you can't really afford -- the whole $30,000K Millionaire Syndrome which, rightly or wrongly, is a Dallas stereotype. The guys who lease the Audi TT but make the minimum monthly payment on his (many) credit cards and has no money in the bank (where materialism would be a good thing). It's owning an Uptown apartment's worth of quickly depreciating crap while having nothing of any real worth. Of course, this isn't just true of Dallas or any one city but it is a knock against the city one hears a lot (especially in some place like Austin).

To be objective, I suggest you also ask this same question on the Austin board.

I disagree, Hstfan. There are no intellectual pleasures, there are only intellectual delusions. If you want to understand the real world of matter and energy and space and time, you won't do it by building an intellectual fantasy in your head. You do it by observing the material world and regulating your behavior to maximize your ability to control it.
It has been said that intellectuals are stupid. Not unintelligent, not slow, or dense, or mentally defective... stupid... in the sense of being unwise. Of being divorced from the real consequences of their thought and behavior as it pertains to the material world.
If you are not materialistic you are ineligible to live in this world... unless you think you can live on ideas instead of food.
Why do I bash Austin? Because the Austin snobs bash Dallas, and I want them to realize that there is a price to pay for demeaning other people.
