The area is usually called Red Bird after the former name of the airport and mall nearby.
It is not generally considered to be a nice or safe area of Dallas.
Within 10-15 minutes and desireable to live in, all I can think of is parts of North Oak Cliff.
What's your price range and what amenities are you looking for in a neighborhood?

Agreed that the Red Bird area is neither nice nor safe. I always feel bad for these out-of-town medical people who get jobs in the RUGH parts of Dallas and they have no idea about the neighborhood!
Las Colinas is a great neighborhood, but that would be a LONG commute. Try something more south, such as Mansfield, Cedar Hill, etc.

I thought they were closing that mall or it had already closed??????
I would NOT rent an apartment real close to that mall or in any area referred to as "Red Bird".
You might check out the Bishops Art District. Not that far and a lot more urban. You could actually walk to some restaurants and bars in the area. Las Colinas would be a HAUL to commute from and would not qualify if your wanting a 10-15 mile commute. There are some areas not too far from where you will be working that would be okay. You might even check out Uptown and McKinney Ave. They would not be far (a LOT closer than Las Colinas) and an urban vibe and close to a lot of things. Bishops Art would be the closest area though.

I would recommend looking in Cedar Hill, which is only a short distance from Southwest Center Mall. There are several apartment complexes in the city and with your price range, you should be able to find something nice there. Plus, you would have amenities such as grocery stores, retail/shopping, and restaurants in close proximity. Duncanville is another possible choice.
The area surrounding Southwest Center Mall isn't the most dangerous neighborhood in the city of Dallas, but the apartment complexes in that area don't have the best reputation. I personally wouldn't recommend looking in that immediate area, especially for an out-of-state newcomer with little knowledge of the area.

There are a couple of apartment complexes in N Oak Cliff just south of downtown called Grand Estates - one is at Founder's Park and the other is at Kessler Park. I don't know anything about them, though.
It seems like there are some other apartments right in this same area too, but they did not come up when I checked yahoo maps. They might be townhouses or lofts or something.
Bishop Arts might have something. The properties are more historic and vintage. Look at Good Space for options.
From this area, it's easy enough to get on I-35 going south from either Colorado or 8th Street (Davis turns into). Then you would go to 67 South to Red Bird.
Also easy enough to get to w/o getting on the highway if you live in N Oak Cliff by taking Hampton Rd south.

South Grand Prairie wouldn't be too far and is safe for the most part. Also DeSoto and Lancaster have good areas. This is the area that would have the largest AA middle class demographic in Dallas, some people are afraid of it just because of that. Still some very nice areas south of I 20 within a close commute, just depends if you are willing to live in an area that is majority minority.

I agree. There are nice areas south of I-20 stretching from the southern part of Grand Prairie, through Duncanville and Cedar Hill, east to DeSoto and Lancaster that the OP may also want to check out as well as the North Oak Cliff area.
