Well, I certainly hope that forecasted cold front is still headed our way with rain and a cool 90's. Praying for a break in this heat wave too.

It was sunny, nice and dry. Average lows were a crisp 51 degrees and there were zero hot muggy nights, with the most frequent low in the 40s! Mind you if you lived out the boonies in say Denton or McKinney your average low was a very chilly 44F and it got as cold as 28 degrees!

My wife used to sound like you, then I had to point out the incredibly nice dry sunny spells that we have in fall, every day when she got home from work. That seems to be what it takes to get rid of the short term memory and general distortion of weather reality that occurs in humans.

These are pics from my yard and my block.

We have reds from the Oak, Yellow from the Sweetgum, magnificent Orange/red from the other Oak, and plain old green from the live oak:

A few past peak colors from my porch:

A massive oak that starts in the creek bed 20 feet below the bottom of this photo, about 1 block away - hard to get the scale on this one without a car or human near the trunk:

Around town even the babies have good color:

Slightly different hue:

Some years I think it is the bradford pears that are stunning. This is from a guy who grew up in the middle of sugar maple country in Wisconsin.

At White Rock they get splashes of color too:

The 30 year average high in Dallas during the coldest month of the year, January, is 55F. So, if you're looking for winter temperatures they aren't going to consistently happen unless it is winter.

Just because it isn't what YOU think fall should be like doesn't mean it isn't fall. I don't think that 80 degree weather is summer, but they think that in Yankeeland.
No need to swear or use "ain't." There are better words from which to choose.

I don't either, but 80 degrees isn't really what I'd call fall weather. I won't use the word Autumn as I normally don't but whether I do or do not, it is correct. I have a native Texas friend who uses it and I think that's where I picked it up so apparently some people "around here" do use the "A" word. I always said fall when I was growing up in California. Let's just say that 80s is the transition from summer to winter because it surely isn't fall weather.

When you're speaking of 80s and 70s in those months, you're speaking of southern California where they say in Texas, "The weather there is so much the same and boring." That, friendly Texans, is not quite the case. Can you believe they cool down into the 50s during most of the summer months and even during the day, the temperature may not get out of the 60s? They actually get a variety during these months. If we did cool down into the 50s, I'd be jumping up and down and whistling Dixie. Turn of the A/C. In fact, one doesn't even need one out there.

That's not even winter weather in Dallas. Dallas gets colder than that. I'll agree ILNC's temperatures would be fall weather.

Those were absolutely beautiful photos. Your Red Oak looks just like mine except mine is a little "chubbier" with lower branches.....gorgeous.....I lvoe that tree!! By the way, I'm not doubting trees don't turn color in this area. They do and the colder the weather, the prettier they become. Not all years are as great as others.

When I moved here from CA, that was one of the things I liked about Texas, cold and crisp mornings with leaves in every color. My parents had a pecan tree that turned a bright yellow. Although they're gone now, the tree still stands and I love to drive by to see it in all its splendor when the weather cooperates as it doesn't always turn.

Average temperatures I was not referring to and and either was TLR as he wrote of temperatures during those months to be in the 80s and 70s during the day. Look at wunderground and view the temperatures from last year on the days from mid September to mid November (THR's months). I don't pull these numbers out of a hat. I really attempt to gather factual information; therefore, short term memory whether it's poor or not has nothing to do with this discussion. Your wife may forget and if that's the case, she should refer to wunderground to get the facts straight. To be honest, we all forget. That's why there is an abundance of information in books and on the internet. When in doubt, look it up. Why should she even believe that you remember? I'm just kidding about that, but really, we all forget.

Of course, not all days were stifling hot, but there were many that were. Some cooled off to the high 50s at night, some didn't get below the 60s. I don't know what year you took those photos, but it's my guess is it wasn't last year. It doesn't matter really. The fact is they do change and they are beautiful.

I love fall weather and winter weather in Texas. I've said that a million times on these forums, but keep in mind I consider fall to have highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s. If someone else wants to consider fall 80s and 70s, okay, but it just doesn't fit what most Americans think of as fall.

.
Your a good 100 miles from my point in the Dallas Metroplex and last year the trees up here DID change colors and they lasted awhile as well. I guess I should have taken pics . Around Texas a good 50 miles can make a HUGE difference in the weather which then effects how the trees do. It really is hard to make blanket statements on the weather for the entire North Central Texas area as it varies drastically from one side to the other. They were stunning in my area of Dallas and the further east we went the more colors we saw on the trees. Also, last year the first 3 football games of the season we experienced a wide range of weather: heat, brutal rain & wind (hurricane remnants) and then COLD. After that first 3 weeks we all joked that we had done our job of experiencing all the extremes of fall weather here in the Dallas area for football games and it should be pleasant from then on out.
