It really is hard to make blanket statements on the weather for the entire North Central Texas area as it varies drastically from one side to the other. They were stunning in my area of Dallas and the further east we went the more colors we saw on the trees. Also, last year the first 3 football games of the season we experienced a wide range of weather: heat, brutal rain & wind (hurricane remnants) and then COLD. After that first 3 weeks we all joked that we had done our job of experiencing all the extremes of fall weather here in the Dallas area for football games and it should be pleasant from then on out.
I'm not that far away, but you are right. My children live in the area and their trees did not turn as brilliantly last year as previous years. Hey again, I love fall in Texas (and cold winters too), so I'm not complaining. There just seems to be a bit of a disagreement with some as to what constitutes fall temperatures.

I did not check wunderground for any city except Dallas since this topic is on the Dallas forum.

With reference to our intense Dallas sunshine - I'm still waiting for more information (pictures would be most appreciated) from momof2dfw about her tan lines...or the lack thereof.

It was sunny, nice and dry. Average lows were a crisp 51 degrees and there were zero hot muggy nights, with the most frequent low in the 40s! Mind you if you lived out the boonies in say Denton or McKinney your average low was a very chilly 44F and it got as cold as 28 degrees!

My wife used to sound like you, then I had to point out the incredibly nice dry sunny spells that we have in fall, every day when she got home from work. That seems to be what it takes to get rid of the short term memory and general distortion of weather reality that occurs in humans.

These are pics from my yard and my block.

We have reds from the Oak, Yellow from the Sweetgum, magnificent Orange/red from the other Oak, and plain old green from the live oak:

A few past peak colors from my porch:

A massive oak that starts in the creek bed 20 feet below the bottom of this photo, about 1 block away - hard to get the scale on this one without a car or human near the trunk:

Around town even the babies have good color:

Slightly different hue:

Some years I think it is the bradford pears that are stunning. This is from a guy who grew up in the middle of sugar maple country in Wisconsin.

At White Rock they get splashes of color too:

The 30 year average high in Dallas during the coldest month of the year, January, is 55F. So, if you're looking for winter temperatures they aren't going to consistently happen unless it is winter.

Truly beautiful pictures! Too bad the fall color is not more wide spread.

Oh you wicked weasel you.

I just gave you a hint............ Just be prepared We will see you blushing miles away. It won't be the sun burning us but your red eyes from starring too long.

Tried to talk hubby into putting the SeadDoo's in the water.......... he wanted to play with his cars Since the weather is great to be out messing with them. Too bad no car shows close by today...... maybe Keller's later this evening

I prefer to race them than to show them, but done both.

This was sent to me by a native Texas friend. Except for the poor little kitty, it's pretty hilarious. I think most would agree to that whether they love the heat or do not.

Dear Diary:

Just moved to Texas! Now this is a state that knows how to live!!
Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. What a place!
It is beautiful. I've finally found my home. I love it here..

June 14th:
Really heating up. Got to 100 today. Not a problem. Live in an
air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car.
What a pleasure to see the sun everyday like this. I'm
turning into a sun worshipper.

June 30th:
Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today. Lots
of cactus and rocks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing
the lawn for me. Another scorcher today, but I love it here.

July 10th:
The temperature hasn't been below 100 all week. How do
people get used to this kind of heat?
At least, it's kind of windy though. But getting used to the
heat is taking longer than I expected.

July 15th:
Fell asleep by the community pool. (Got 3rd degree burns
over 60% of my body).. Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do.
I learned my lesson though. Got to respect the ol' sun in a
climate like this.

July 20th:
I missed Lomita (my cat) sneaking into the car when I left
this morning. By the time I got to the hot car at noon, Lomita
had died and swollen up to the size of a shopping bag, then
popped like a water balloon. The car now smells like Kibbles and Bits.
I learned my lesson though. No more pets in this heat.
Good ol' Mr. Sun strikes again.

July 25th:
The wind sucks. It feels like a giant blow dryer!!
And it's hot as h---. The home air-conditioner is on the
fritz and the AC repairman charged $200 just to drive by and tell
me he needed to order parts.

July 30th:
Been sleeping outside on the patio for 3 nights now,
$225,000 house and I can't even go inside. Lomita is the lucky one.
Why did I ever come here?

Aug. 4th:
It's 110 degrees. Finally got the air-conditioner fixed today.
It cost $500 and gets the temperature down to 85. I hate
this stupid state.

Aug. 8th:
If another wise guy cracks, 'Hot enough for you today?' I'm
going to strangle him. Damn this heat. By the time I get to work,
the radiator is boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I
smell like baked cat!!

Aug. 9th:
Tried to run some errands after work. Wore shorts, and when I
sat on the seats in the car, I thought my butt was on fire.
My skin melted to the seat. I lost 2 layers of flesh and all
the hair on the back of my legs and butt . .. . Now my car smells
like burnt hair, and baked cat.

Aug 10th:
The weather report might as well be a recording. Hot
and sunny. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. It's been too hot to do anything
for 2 months and the weatherman says it might really warm up
next week. Doesn't it ever rain in this state? Water rationing
will be next, so my $1700 worth of cactus will just dry up and blow over.
Even the cactus can't live in this heat.

Aug. 14th:
Welcome to HELL! Temperature got to 115 today. Cactus are dead.
Forgot to crack the window and blew the windshield out
of the car. The installer came to fix it and guess what he
asked me??? "Hot enough for you today?"
My sister had to spend $1,500 to bail me out of jail.
Texas, what kind of a sick demented idiot would want to live here??
Will write later to let you know how the trial goes.

LOL!

Sounds like the Texas I remember.

But...but...but... the humidity is ONLY 30%

I love amatuer meterologists who think they understand what things like relative humidity mean and their effects on the climate.
