I'm thinking of taking a day trip to Denton and would like to know five things to do/see. I like historical buildings, book/music stores, coffee shops, etc..Any reccomendations for local food? I live in Dallas so I'm interested in restaurants that only exist in Denton. Thanks.

Be sure to check out Mr. Chopsticks (1633 Scripture, Denton) if you like Thai food - it is really reasonably priced and is just Fantastic! Their Pad-Thai is the best I've ever had - even at much more expensive Thai restaurants. I lived in Denton when I was in grad school and Mr. Chopsticks is one of the things I miss the most!

Recycled Books on the square is great. http://www.recycledbooks.com/

The Cupboard is a great natural foods store that has a neat little cafe. www.cupboardnaturalfoods.com Their Mediterranean Tuna sandwich and smoothies are YUMMY!

Sleeping Lizzards is a neat little gift store with all kinds of quirky stuff:

Neat local gallery: OXIDE GALLERY

For coffee, this place looks intriguing since Karma has closed (RIP) and Uncommon Grounds became a sushi place: Naranja Cafe: Bubble Tea, Boba, Smoothies, Slushes, Juice, Coffee, Hot Drinks, Ice-Cream also, Art Six.

Note: I'm an ex alumni, and haven't really been back since '98, so make sure to check out my recos online first in case anything has closed. I tried to verify first!

The Little Chapel in the Woods on TWU is an architectural gem! Art deco-era chapel built by the father of Texas Modernism O'Neil Ford- it is simply breathtaking and ethereal. Named one of the 10 most stylish buildings in Texas this year by Texas Monthly.

Also there is a great bar-b-que place but I can't for the life of me remember the name of it. I do remember it is west of 35 and not far from the No Texas university turn off.

There is a great ice cream shop in that historical downtown square in Denton. Seems to be not-a-chain one, home-made!

Also someone pointed out that the statue of the soldier on that square is of the Confederacy one, so don't forget to take a picture

I think the best is to come late in the evening, it looks pretty. A couple of hours and you're done with Denton...

Thanks guys. I went there yesterday and was pretty impressed with the town square area in particular. It seems as if there are two cities within a city. The part of Denton around the University/Downtown, which is similar to Austin in a lot of ways, and the rest of the town, which is either really suburban or kind of run down.

Im quite perplexed that this hasn't been mentioned yet:
if you don't experience what Denton has to offer in regards to its music scene (house shows and or regular music venue shows) then you are missing out. Denton didn't get voted best music scene in the whole U.S in 2008 for nothing. Its like visiting Austin for the first time in 1984 (back when the austin wasn't so gentrified and corporatized) and not hearing or seeing any music.

Ah. My Alma Mater.

Denton is a cool town. TWU has a museum dedicated to the clothing of all the First Ladies. It's interesting to see how the styles changed through the years.

The "Old Main Aud" is an interesting building. There are several very old buildings on campus (I lived in a dorm built in 1913 my frosh year).
