Politics,Religion,and Racism in Highland Park
Highland Park looks beautiful, sounds like it has great schools. We like the look of it and have seen some houses we like.
Can someone tell me about the "climate" there (no, not the weather). Is it conservative/Republican like most of TX? How would a liberal fit in? How about a Liberal Atheist? How about a white liberal atheist couple with a black son (he's adopted obviously)? And no...this isn't a joke!
Thanks!!
Nellie

Um, sadly probable the most "conservative/Republican" area one could pick in ALL of Dallas and Texas. Try Lake Highlands, Lakewood or some other areas of Dallas. Sad to say but true

Oh. Well...thanks for responding! We live in a really liberal area right now, so I think that might be a bit of a shock for us..
Are Lake Highlands and Lakewood pretty areas with historic homes and/or farily "green"? Do they have low crime and good schools?
We would be looking to spend up to about $1million.
Thanks again!!

Try these zipcodes on realtor.com, you will have no problem at all finding homes for right around $1M that are even better than the Park Cities. You'll find some lots that are an acre or better (or course most those are over $1M). Along w/ many older homes that have been lovingly updated you'll find several new builds.

In the 2004 election Dallas county was the most Democratic leaning of the Metroplex, with a 50/50 vote, next was Tarrant county with a 63.1 Republican, and 36.9 Democratic.

It's very much old money, and when W's term is up, he will be residing in HP. The city is more ignorant then racist. For example when HPHS was celebrating hispanic herritage month, they allowed the students to dress up. Many came dressed as maids and lanscapers. I believe that the first black family moved into HP just a few years ago, this was reported in D magazine.

Actually HPHS wasn't celebrating hispanic heritage month, it was a spirit week. Some seniors decided they were going to dress up and did so. It wasn't alot and most at the high school really disapproved.

dallas voting
believe me--the reason Dallas country had such high ratio of Democratic votes was not because of Highland Park. The precinct for Highland Park went Republican--Highland Park is an island of WASPish values even if a few people of other ethinic minorities might have bought homes there or some WASPs might have a more liberal leaning...Don't equate Dallas co which has large numbers of low-income, minority residents and younger liberal ones w/Highland Park township...
my son taught for 3 years at the HP junior high==maybe one or two black kids in his class--most totally self-inflated and bored already w/school--trusting to the the trust fund to get them where they want---major politic-ing w/parents...
there are probably some people w/more liberal points of view but would not count on it
it is getting chic to be green so you will have more luck there and there are many homes less than a million inside the loop that have been refurbished or new-built on old lots that are georgeous--
that is one thing I will say about Dallas--they do love the look of homes from past eras and rebuild in that style--not the look that most new builds in Tarrant co are going for unless you custom build and spend over a million...

My dear friend used to live in Highland Park. He put his children in a private school because he was not wanting them in the HP school system. This was many years ago, like 15. I haven't a clue about how the public schools are now.
He was and is as conservative (thank God) as one can get and served in the TX legislature way back when.

See this is what I am kind of looking to avoid. I don't have an issue with people of differing political views. But I do have a problem with those who are going to have a "thank God" kind of view toward it. I won't go in waving a rainbow flag, and I won't go in Bush bashing. I have my own views, and others have theirs. But...I want people who are tolerant of other views. A statement like "he was and is as conservative as one can get"...OK...I'm fine with that. But the "thank God" part? That's a cut on liberals and I don't want to live in an environment like that...so I guess Highland Park is out. I'll look into more diverse areas people are suggesting. Thanks!
