CHEESE in Dallas I.S.D.
Parents, beware.
This is very scary as I'm sure you all know if you live in Dallas. Cheese (heroin-based drug mix~highly addictive) cases are on the rise in the school district according to the news this morning. I live in my own little world, so this is probably not new news to any of you like it was for me.
Arrests for possession or dealing the drug have risen 82% during the current school year and area addiction treatment programs are seeing more users coming in requesting help.
While arrests for possession at this time have been concentrated in the northwest Dallas corridor, it is perceived that its usage will spread rapidly across the district and surrounding districts.
So far the drug has not been detected in other major Texas cities like Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. Most users are male Hispanics in their mid-teens.

Thanks KewGee. I posted about it a few weeks ago, but it is a serious concern for any parent. From what I recall from the Dallas Morning News article, the average age of a user is 14, 80% are male and 98% are Hispanic. Hits run as little as $2, and withdrawal symptons can occur after only a few doses. Drug related deaths have been seen in Cockrell Hill, Coppell, Garland, Grand Prairie, Mesquite and West Dallas.

Just to say, I think statistics in this situation are pointless. They shouldn't matter, you cannot generalize a group of people based on gender or ethnicity. The bottom line here is to be concerned for your child and keep honest line of communication open.

Those are the facts that the DMN is reporting, and these groups are the ones most effected by the drug. The focus of prevention should be on these groups.

The racial/ethnic breakdown of this drug is crazy. Has there ever been such a confined drug epidemic? Not to say that it won't spread(most likely will), but its just interesting. I don't exactly know what to make of it.
Also interesting is the fact that anyone else would even try it at all given that its all over the media and has to be the word at school.

There is also another drug mix going around called "Strawberry Quick" and "Strawberry Poprocks".
http://www.nbc5i.com/family/13241670/detail.html
I got the following from a school in McKinney:
"TO ALL IT MAY CONCERN,
There is a very scary thing going on in the schools right now that all need to be aware of. There is a type of crystal meth going around that looks like strawberry poprocks. It smells like strawberry also and it is being handed out to kids in school yards in AR. I'm sure it will make its way around the country if it hasn't already. Kids are ingesting this thinking that it is candy and being rushed off to the E.R. in dire condition. Please instruct your children to not accept candy that looks like this even from a friend and to take any that they may have to a teacher, principal, etc. Please pass this around it could save some family a lot of heartache!
That is what they are calling strawberry meth or strawberry quick."

Yes. I see your point. We shouldn't generalize all Hispanics as being 14 year-old, male drug users. Nor should we expect or support our local schools if they somehow decide to recommend or hire Spanish fluent or even Hispanic counselors. And in no way should we expect the schools to place said counselors in the schools where drugs have been most prevalent.

By the way, I'm sure that teens across the Metroplex have access to both of these drugs. It would be pretty naive to think that they are isolated to certain school districts, especially when from one end to the other end of this side of the Metroplex is about 35 miles. That's nothing really. We all live very close to this, so it's important to keep your eyes open.
I'm starting to feel like an old guy with all of these drugs I've never heard of....I guess the base drug is the same as what we've seen in the past, just prepared a little different. I need to research.
Here's a good peice on Strawberry Quick:

Here's a picture of a lab (pretty creepy looking, what happened to growing weed in with the Tomatoes)
