We will possibly be relocating to dallas and I was wondering if anyone knows how much it costs to have a cellar built (I'm really afraid of the tornadoes). Thanks.

I had one installed 10 years ago for about $4,200. It is a one-pour cement cellar and measures 10' x 10'. I love it! I have no clue what a comparable one would cost today.

I know there are different kinds, but I wanted one "poured" into the ground, not the type that are already made of steel and "put" into the ground. They say safe rooms are good to have within the home which I agree to an extent, but if a really bad tornado hits, I don't see how even a safe room will hold up when homes are ripped of their foundations, pavement is ripped from the roads, and giant trees are uprooted and blown away.

I'm sure they'll be disagreements on that but common sense just tells me differently. Truly though, only a professional person who knows the whys and wherefores of a safe room would know for sure.

You are every right to be afraid of tornadoes. I lived here for 18 years before I finally had one installed. I always said I would NEVER live in Texas without one but did for many years. Be smart and don't do what I did!

I wish you the best as you contemplate your move.

I know there are several precast concrete firms in Hillsboro that make storm shelters. They're all on Hwy 77 just north of town.

Safe rooms are made of steel reinforced concrete and are bolted to the foundation. They really are quite safe, but I do agree if you can get one put INTO thr ground, it is much safer.
