since there is no list of the colleges students were attending, the number of credit hours, or the courses they were taking--
I would take this with a grain of salt to some extent
there are some schools here who traditionally have graduated students who are the first in their families to attend college--frankly any of those kids who make it through the first year get my applause...
frankly the idea that the Science/Engineering Magnet at DISD have 25% of students earning B or higher says to me that the magnet school is not preparing those kids for the types of colleges most of them want to attend...
statistics w/o context are just like alphabet soup though--
what was the GPA for these students in high school--maybe high school grading really is inflated

JMO, but I think there are way too many variables involved to make sense of these numbers just as they are. Take TAG, for instance (LOL about the Newsweek comment!). Tiny class of kids, all used to be the brightest, off to their first year of college with loads of other bright kids. And what colleges are they attending? The valedictorian this year will be attending MIT, I believe. Are we really going to compare a C or D average for the first year at MIT to the same average at community college?
How do these kids do once they've really settled in? Are some of them hitting too many parties? And once again we have the socioeconomic factors to consider. Take the last 14 schools from the list, could it be that those students attending college are also working full time?
Way too many things to look at, in my opinion. Would love to see the statistics continued, however, into their second year. Could be interesting. How many continued school? Did they pull up their grades?

I don't know how I originally missed your excellent post, Loves2read.
Yes, there's no context to these statistics. We can make some guesses about them, I suppose, but that's about it.

Since it only includes kids who attended Texas colleges and universities, all those Harvard, MIT kids and those kids who went to the main campus of The University of Some State because they couldn't get into University of Texas at Austin are not included in these stats.
There are some more stats included in this study including school poverty level, graduation rate, number of graduates, number of graduates attending college in Texas and then of those kids that I listed above - percent who ended their freshman year with an average below a C and percent who ended up with a B or better.
For instance - Dallas' Talented and Gifted Magnet in Dallas ISD:
School poverty level - medium (20-50% low income)
Total high school graduates - 43
Graduation Rate - 100%
Number of grads in Texas Universities - 12
Grads in Texas public universities - 28%
Percent with less than C average - 42%
Percent with B average or higher - 25%

OK, so we have much more info here. Only 12 out of a class of 43 attend Texas public universities. That's interesting in itself. I wonder how those kids ranked in their HS graduating class.

I wonder if the kids coming from the high D/F rate schools are headed to places like UT or A&M via the top 10% rule? Maybe we need to examine whether or not those kids need to go to a lower school that they are more prepared for and potentially transfer up if they can truly hack it.

I know for a fact that more than 12 TAG graduates in 2008 attended in-state public schools last year--as I went to middle school with most of them.
TAG's top kids often end up in honors programs at UT.
Many of TAG's middling to bottom kids, who would be dominating in the rest of DISD, end up at UTD because UTD showers scholarship money on them.

Caligula, kids getting in to UT on the top ten rule have a higher average GPA than those not getting in on the top ten rule (who tend to be from large suburban high schools).
Kids who work hard in high school tend to work hard in college too.
