Close friends live on Lake Ray Hubbard. There was an alligator there this summer as well. They ARE out there. Just don't see them as often. The neighbor killed one that was at our lakehouse the summer of 2008. It was a good 100' up out of the waters edge.

Correct. There was even a story awhile back about a pond behind a high school in south Dallas that was a habitat for alligators. There are a lot more of them out there than people realize.

Like I said before..... they wouldnt make the news if they were so common.

They dont hide. If there is one in the water someone is going to see it. They swim around with their heads up out of the water and they love to sun on the banks in the middle of the day. I know a little about Gators and even have caught several of them when I was younger. I have fished the rivers all through out rowlett and Garland from Lavon To Hubbard on kayaks and on the banks and I have never seen one.

The one our friends saw was 2 doors down from them on the shore. It was in the news. The pond with them was in the news. They even said then they are more common than most people realize. Just not as many as in Florida but they are there. Sorry, I didn't call the news when the one was killed down at our place. Not everyone does. I've seen pictures of them others have taken of them in Lake Ray Hubbard. Not everyone freaks out and calls the news when they see them.

I've been on Lake Ray Hubbard a gazillion times and never seen one either. Doesn't mean they are not there

Default Alligators in Texas

Alligators in Texas:

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publicat...w7000_0162.pdf

There are some good recipes for alligator meat at the bottom of this link
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publicat...w7000_1011.pdf

"If You See An Alligator"
TPWD: If You See An Alligator
Doesn't say anything about calling the news

They ARE hunted and they are out there.

Please don't freak out. I spent my youth at various camps on Texas lakes and I can only remember a couple of times when a snake was near a swimming area. They really don't want to be anywhere near you. I'd stay away from reedy, swampy areas near shore and enjoy the boat.

When I was living in Houston alligators were a common sight around the many bayous & drainage ditches. One time on the news a biker in Memorial Park almost ran over one.

Seriously, I used to ski at Ray Hubbard and Lewisville fairly often and never saw a snake out in the areas where you would be in the water. They tend to stay near shore and in swampy areas - more food and basking area for them.

Enjoy the boat - nothing beats a day on the lake.

Don't worry. It will be fine . Been in the lakes in North Texas for all of my 40+ years and only seen 2 snakes in or right at the water. Both were this last year. I've seen more snakes at my house not near the lake than I have at a lake.

Keep the boat and have fun

Alligators don't like to be around humans. If you have been around most lakes in East Texas and North Texas you have probably been a lot closer to one than you may realize. They have a keen sense of smell and can detect you long before you them. If they sense a human getting closer they usually go the other way and hide. Unless you get way to close especially to a female guarding her nest they won't come at you. The alligators here are not as used to human contact as those in some areas around Houston and Florida. So they tend to hide and shy away from coming into contact with a human. With the one at our lakehouse to be so far out of the water it had to be starving for food and was in search of such. Not typical at all. This is why we don't normally see them even though they are here.

Wanted to get out on the lake this past weekend. Didn't have time. Too many kids activities. Soon, very soon. Heck, might just skip working and go one day while the kids are at school
